Vulcan 1500 Classic FI Model confusion

I have a 2005 Vulcan 1500 Classic FI, and there sure is a lot of confusion about that model. If I Google "2005 Vulcan 1500 Classic FI," several sites show up that claim to show specifications for that bike, but I can't find any that are right. They all describe the carborated 1500 Classic, and that was not made in a 2005 model. They show that the bike has 40mm Keihin carbs, dry weight of 644 lb, a 4.2 gallon gas tank, compression at 8.6:1, and 83 ft-lb of torque. The correct specs are: Fuel injection with 36mm throttle bodies, dry weight of 659 lb, a 5 gallon gas tank, compression at 9.0:1, and 85 ft-lb of torque.

The first model year for the Vulcan 1500 Classic FI was 2000, the VN1500-N1. That year Kawasaki also made the carborated classic, the VN1500-E3. For 2002, the FI was VN1500-N2 and the carborated was VN1500-E4. In 2002, the FI was VN1500-N3 and the carborated was VN1500-E5. For the 2003 and 2004 years, Kawasaki only produced the carborated models E6 and E7 respectively. In 2005, Kawasaki dropped the carborated and only made the fuel injected VN1500-N4 (my bike). Kawasaki continued to make the VN1500-N series fuel injected 1500 Classics through 2008.

The 2005 model year seems to be particularly confusing, because it was the first year Kawasaki made only the fuel injected 1500 Classic after making only the carborated 1500 Classic the previous 2 model years.

Not only were there engine changes when Kawasaki came out with the FI version of the Classic in 2000, but there were changes to the frame that increased the weight of the bike by 15 pounds, and they were able to increase the gas tank size by .8 gallon by getting rid of the speedometer cable and going electronic.

I'm afraid this stuff is going to be a problem for me when I buy accessories and parts for this bike, and I think it's had the effect of keeping the price down on this model. It is still priced like a carborated Classic, which was several hundred dollars less during the years that they made both types.

Sam,
I ran into this same issue with my 2006. My owner's manual specs. state "dry weight: 659 lbs." and "fuel tank capacity: 5.0 gal." But many bike spec. sites give the "644 lbs., 4.2 gal." specs (which are the specs. for the carb. model). I sent one site an email suggesting they correct the wrong specs., which they never did, and never got back to me (powersports network). I now take all their info with a grain of salt, and told them so.

If your bike is fuel injected, then your tank is 5 gal. That being said, I've never actually put 5 gal. into mine. The most I've ever put in was 4.3 gal., but I fill mine with it on the kick stand; I think if the bike is straight the tank will take more. Also keep in mind the fuel pump is inside the tank, which must take up space for at least a few tenths of a gal.

Also, don't trust your gas gauge. I get about 150 miles out of the first half tank, then about 30 miles later my warning light is coming on! Not kidding. Then when I fill it, it'll only take about 4 gal. Very strange. I've never run it dry and don't plan on it, so I'll never really know how much it would take starting from empty.

I have the same issue. I get about 200km in the first half and them between 50 and 80 until the warning light comes on.

Yes and No

Yes, Joelg, that Kawasaki site has the right specs. I added that site to my favorites. Thanks. I don't know how you found it. Even when I try to navigate on it to other cruiser models, it only lists the current model offerings. When I select different years on the immediate page from your link, it only shows the 1500 Classic in years that also had the FI (2000, 2001, and 2002). Kawasaki has managed to really confuse the public regarding the Vulcan 1500 Classic FI vs. Vulcan 1500 Classic. At least this gives me an authoritative site with the correct specs for the 2005 Classic. Before I had to go by my Owners Manual and some motorcycle magazine road test articles that describe the differences between the Vulcan 1500 Classic and the 1500 Classic FI. Thanks, again.

Nope, MN-Nomad, the TMW site is one of many that have it wrong. They claim to show the specs for a 2005 Kawasaki 1500 Classic FI; but they've got the specs for a carborated 1500 Classic that wasn't made for model year 2005. Thanks for trying for me, though.

Better yet

That last link you posted is even better yet. If you key in all the years 2000 thru 2008 individually, and select Vulcan 1500 Classic for each year, then select Vulcan 1500 Classic FI for each year, it will confirm what I said in my original post for this thread about the years that both models were manufactured and which years just one or the other was manufactured. Otherwise, that's really hard to determine. I compiled it from a lot of online resources. I think that can be valuable to make sure we're ordering parts and accessories for the right bike, and also when we sell our 1500 Classic to verify for the buyer that it's a fuel injected model (or not). The fact that the Vulcan 1500 Classic FI of any year has a knob labeled "choke" only adds to the confusion.

Thanks again.

I know I checked out my bike online and it was listed as a carborated model. But when I bought it the mechanic said it was a FI :)

I actually wanted a FI and was hesitant to buy the carborated version in this day and age.

I guess this explains in part why I got such a good deal.

Great sites thanks.

youve answered your own question. The important info here is the letter and number after the engine size.
All you have to do is quote them when ordering parts.
The Letter tells the type of bike, and the number tells you how many years that type has been made.

E1 to E8 was a 5 speed carb, built for 8 years before being superceded.
My nomad is an L1, telling me its a year 2000 Fi nomad.
