Transmission problem, any ideas?

Hello folks, I just traded my bike in for a 2003 Vulcan 1500 nomad. I've only ridden the bike for a couple KM's, but loved it! I traded my old bike for this one, knowing it has a transmission problem, it slips out of 2nd gear if you come on to it hard, other than that it works great. It was too good of a deal to pass up. Anybody have any ideas on the problem, I'm thinking a bad shifting fork? Anyway, glad to be here, and love my new to me vulcan.

Many riders have gone thousands of miles with the same problem that you have, but rest assured, it will only get worse over time and also there is some risk in having bits of debris floating about in your transmission.
If you plan on repairing at some point, better sooner than later.

If it is "jumping out of second and only second" as you describe and requires you to push on the shifter to either re-select second or another gear and not just back off of the throttle to resume forward progress, then the clutch spring will not help. But replace it anyways if you have the engine apart.
A slipping clutch has a whole different set of symtoms.
Another symptom of the gear jumping "may" be a slight grinding when you shift into second.
Make sure that we are talking the same problem here.

I have the same problem. I have a new clutch and the "judge" spring installed. Everything that I have read points to a bent shift fork and gear replacement. I borrowed a shop manual to see how involved it is and I was very surprised. I expected to just remove the engine and a side cover to gain access. This is not the case. The engine needs to be totally torn down to access the transmission shafts that you need to access. I am running mine as is for now. The "trade in soon" light might be on.

Thanks for the info, I talked to two very good bike mechanics locally, and they both said the same thing....ride it! They said "you'll know when it's time to fix it, or dump it." They said that they know people that have rode them another 20-30-40,000 Kms with no big problems, just short shift it to third :fingers-crossed::glasses-cool:
