If I were to buy a mustang seat, is it worth about 150 more dollars to get the one with a backrest?

If you have any lower back issues at all (like me) or you're planning long days riding, then it's absolutely worth it. Keep in mind that the backrest is very adjustable, and can be removed without tools for short rides around town if you want...

I see that there are one and two piece seats. Which one of those do you get? So evidently one has two pieces, and another is a one piece. What is the difference in them other than number of pieces. I think I have the only 900 in my area, so cant go looking at seats convieniently.

The standard mustang seat has around a 8 to 9 inch "well " which is just fine for me .... everybody's butt and backs are different, get what you think maybe right for you.
I personally do not like back rests, they look like they are a pain in the butt to get on and off the bike. Like I said ... each to their own, what is right for me is not for some.

The backrest is removeable in about 2 seconds....it just lifts out of the slot with about 4 clicks of adjustment as it pulls out. A velcro tab covers the slot it fits in. If you don't like swinging your leg over the backrest just fold it forward, climb on and flip it back...it hinges. Even when it is at the top adjustment it is rock solid....this is not a cheap floppy adjustable backrest. It is amazing and I rode it 50 feet and never removed it since. I have taken it out when I parked it outside for the night when parking at a motel but that is the only time. You will not be sorry you have the backrest and if you wanted to pose without it...slip it out. Its that easy. There is also an adjustable screw on the back side of the backrest that tilts the backrest to your best comfort position....I can reach behind the backrest while riding and adjust this screw device since it has a knob on the back that I can turn with my gloves on...chrome knurled. So easy. The 1 peice seat is just that....a rock solid 1 piece unit with no give to it. I have not sat on a 2 peice but I would guess it is so you can ride with the solo seat only, if you want to. This one piece Wide Touring Studded Seat is a great seat and made riding a joy not a painfull experience. Installation took 5 minutes and fit was perfect. The passenger seat is about 2 1/2" thicker than the stock pad and comfy also. I rode 300 miles yesterday like nothing and have done 500 mile days back to back to back. Not a problem. I have 18,000 miles on this seat and it still looks brand new. Here is a pic of mine on my Classic.

My Wide Tourer with backrest was listed as a two piece?? Seat + backrest= 2 piece? You can buy the wide tourer without a backrest= 1 piece? This was my experience so it may be best to check with Mustang before deciding 1-piece or 2-piece. I was worried until I opened the box that I order the correct seat. I was also worried about it fitting a 900LT as LT is not listed for this seat.

If you buy the seat without the backrest there is no slot or system to later add a backrest. So if you think you may possible want one in the future it would be way cheaper to buy it with the backrest and just take it out and store it until you need it. That was my plan but one ride with it in convinced me to always use it. I love it.

All the mustang seats for the Vulcan 900 are 1 Piece. 1 piece and 2 piece refer to the actual amount of seats. on the 900 we only have one seat lock for the whole seat assembly. some bikes are 2 seat locks, so they require 2 seats. In the case of The vulcan 2000, mustang has the 2 piece seat for it. the VN 900 is only 1 piece no matter if you have the backrest or not.

The mustang seat, for most people eliminates the back pain because of the angle of the seat meeting the back rest. the mustang seat also has a higher "built in" backrest in the lower part of the seat. the shape of the seat VS the stock is more "flat" where the stock seat is curved.

Yup...so far my efforts at DYI's on the stock seat aren't doing the trick. Some improvement perhaps, but not nearly enough. Tailbone hurts like the dickens after an hour or so depending on how much I move around. When I lift my butt up after the pain starts--the pain is significant. I damaged it when I was a teen in a hang glider accident.
Need to get this resolved, but can't waste money. I really appreciate all of the comments and such on the forum. I've been reading through the search.

I just ordered a mustang vintage seat. Didn't get the driver backrest though so I guess I will see how much I will be missing it. I thought I would give it a go without the backrest first... Will see if that was a mistake it not. The seat looks good so my bumm will be the test on my next ride... That is when I get the seat

New seat has been on but have not had the chance for a long ride yet. Still looking forward to that but the mustang wide seat I received has that little but of a back rest like area that feels good on the short runs. You do sit up and back a bit more with this seat though which for my big lurch frame is good so far.
