Some folks say they have installed a 160 on the stock rim with no issues.
For sure a 150/80-16 will fit as some of us have done.

 

I'm curious... Is there a recommended size that will maintain the hight of the tire but get wider? I'm not interested in a sports bike looking tire but don't want an obnoxiously fat looking tire either. I'm also wanting white walls.

The 150/80 is actually shorter than the original 140/90.
There is a white wall in the 150, not sure of the 140 though.

Continent milestone, Metzler 880, and Dunlop 404 all come in a 140/90/16 WWW. Dunlop 402 has a MU85 WWW that last twice as long as the 404. for tire size comparisomes, I use the link below.

Mumbles my friend you should have sold him on the pros of switching to tubeless and aluminum wheels!

I still kick myself in the butt for letting go of the other vn800 with the en500 wheels.
The problem is I get to see it every other day or so because a friend has it now.

I'm leaning of going with mag wheels on my recent vn800 but from a Marauder 800 instead of the vn500. What do you think?

 

Bob, not a fan of aluminum wheels.. No matter the benefits. I love the look of spoked wheels over mags any day. ;^)

Understand that, I am somewhat on the fence about either, I like the shiny wheels better too, but a tubeless flat repair at 3AM, 18 miles from the nearest exit on I64 has sort of convinced me i am just lazy enough to stick with dull aluminum until I can afford to chrome them

 

Well when you put it that way! Understood... Course I still lean toward fashion over function. Lol!!

Sure will, it'll probably be a while but will keep you in mind.
My friend might still have the stock rear wheel to his vn800. I'll ask and let you know.

A set of chromed aluminium wheels that will take a tubeless tire. I do like the sound of that.

However, until I can find a set for under $100 (I shall not hold my breath waiting for that), I suppose I'll stay stuck with the tubes.

yea, it cost that much just to machine both wheels to fit, not including the price of the wheels!!

 

This is the wheels off a Kaw EN500 that Bob Myers machined to fit the Vulcan.

 

Cool, I appreciate it. My bike sat in some dudes backyard for years so the spokes are all corroded and there was rust on the inside of the rim, the shop that hanged my tire cleaned it up
For me and painted it to prevent rust from coming back.

Those marauder wheels look pretty good on the Vulcan, I'm impressed!

Cool the shop was able to help you out for the meantime.

 

My spokes are all nasty, but the rim can be shined up nice.. I am thinking about rattle canning the spokes, maybe have my passenger do it while riding..
