DANGEROUS : Viking Lamellar Saddlebags on Vulcan 900

Viking Lamellar Slanted Leather Covered Motorcycle Hard Saddlebags
Mounted on my Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom 2009.

The bags themselves are look nice and are great when they aren't HANGING BY A SINGLE BOLT !

Before mounting, had to buy own mounting bolts; ones provided were too long. I replaced just about EVERY inside nut and bolt (many came stripped to begin with), had to bend the latches to ensure they lock and close (they flew open once while riding!), the tiny screws holding the reflectors on are too short (the reflectors are each half-popped off but all this is repairable.

MOST DANGEROUSLY and have had a bolt break TWICE!
First time about 2 months after got bike. Was left riding with a saddlebag hanging by only one bolt in the West TX desert over an hour from anywhere.

Second time after about 8 months. I ride about 1000 mi/month year-round.

Bags are not overloaded. Contacted Viking first time but quickly got the idea I was wasting my time. Will post pix soon.

Anyone else has these issues?
Anyone have advice how to mount these better?

Yup, a 3rd bolt broke again while 350 miles from home.
Snapped Grade 12 bolts from Fastenal with bags only packed to 1/2 volume as I put my clothes, tent, etc in a roll atop a fender rack.

As I did with my LeatherLykes on the Vulcan 500, I will eventually reinforce the mounts with a metal plate spanning both mounting holes inside and outside the bags. Meanwhile, I will add some bigger washers.

When I lost the bolts, I lost the metal and rubber spacer that goes between the bags and bike I bought this piece : 92161A DAMPER 92161-0375 but it is only the rubber damper.
Anyone know how to order the metal part that it goes around. From my own reading, and that of the shop's reading, the metal part belongs to the fender itself and cannot be ordered.

Also lost Viking hardware piece. The one that the bottom bolt inside the bag scres into on the outside. Not looking forward to asking them to ship me a couple of replacements.

As I have seen many others post, the bags are look great but Viking hardware and mounting leave MUCH to be desired.

Issues with Viking Bags and Bolts

Aug 2017
Bought 2009 900 custom used
Ordered Viking bags from MotorcycleHouse.com
Arrived within the week and installed w/blue Loctite and bolts from True Value

Sept 2017 – Break Bolt 1
5 weeks and 2500+ miles, bolt on front belt-side broke. Rode150+ scary miles from Sanderson, TX into Del Rio with broken bag bungee-corded to other bag. MC shop drilled out broken part and replaced it with bolt from nearby True Value. (An aside: If you are near Del Rio and need anything, support T & T Cycles at 5800 US 90. I stumbled across his shop and he was a great help.)

Aug 2017
Replaced all 4 bolts with w/Grade 12.9 bolts from Fastenal

May 2018 – Break Bolt 2
After about 8 months and 5000+ miles later, bolt in same location (front on belt-side) but now upgraded to Grade 12.9 snapped. Bags were near empty since I was riding locally. My local shop tried to ding me for a half-hour shop time to drill out the bolt. With some protest, I managed to escape for “only” $20. If I known “local” does not mean friendly, I would have self-rescued since I was only 30 miles from home this time. As it turns out, a grommet and washer that the bolts thread through was lost on the road. The shop didn’t notice but I did as I rode home and heard a new noise when I hit a bump. Finally parked, I realized the front of the bag was closer to the bike than the rear. The noise I was hearing was the bottom barrel bolt hitting the belt guard on bumps and when the bike was on the kickstand. Nothing I could do until the new part came in so I left it as is.

Pix 1-2 : Grommet and Washer

Does anyone know the part numbers for the grommet and washer?
I ordered 92161-A damper…but it was not what I needed. I still need 2 sets of these :<

June 2018 - Break Bolt 3
One month and 1000+ miles later, I stopped for gas 350 miles from home and saw the rear belt-side bolt had snapped. The bags were only half full.

Road 20 miles to campground with bag hanging by one bolt. In AM, saw I could use needle-nose pliers to twist out broken part and replace bolt. Yes, carry around spares since the first one broke. Again, grommet and washer that bolts thread through was lost on the road. At least now the bags were same distance from fender in front and back. Maybe that extra stress made the rear bolt break. Or maybe it was just “time” since that Grade 12.9 bolt had been on since Sept 2017.

Pix 3 : Broken 12.9 Grade Bolt

June 2018 – Lose Barrel Nut
I regularly check tightness of all hardware on bags. When I went to Fastenal to replenish my stick of Grade 12.9 bolts, I saw that somewhere along the way, I lost the front barrel nut. Fastenal helped me put together a work-around.

Being optimistic, I politely asked Viking to replace barrel nut as a courtesy. 4 days later they wrote me asking me for my order number (or name and email address). Within a few hours, they sent me a reply telling me they cost $6.99 each and I could call them or order them online. I looked online and they are out of stock. https://www.vikingbags.com/product-12262-detailed.html

Pix 4 : Barrel Nut Damage to Belt Cover
Just happy parts haven’t fallen into the belt or rear wheel and caused real damage to the bike or biker !

To address VN750Guy's questions

> So what seems to be the problem with repeated bolt breakage?
>Is there some variation of installation to change the attaching-point environment? By that I mean do your bolts (hell, I don't even know how MY bolts screw in!) simply screw into a threaded spot and bottom out or do they extend out the other side some? If they extend out, could adding a nut on the end possibly add some gripping/squeezing action to prevent any sawing-type movements?
My guess is that the bags hang too far from the bike therefore long bolts absorb too much stress and eventually break

- I don’t think there is enough room to add a nut at the back of the bolts since it is so close to the fender.

Pix 5 : Photo on belt-side where I am lacking both grommet and washers show a tiny space behind plastic fender piece. I can also see that the end of the bolt is has made a small dent where it hits the fender. The other side lacks this space at all and there are no dents as the bolt does not touch the fender.

- On my Vulcan 500, my LeatherLykes developed stress-cracks near the two bolts where they mount. As suggested at LL Reinforcement Mod , a friend added a metal plate spanning both bolts inside and outside the bags. I will add larger washers now and later try ask my friend to do the same on these bags. It will relieve some on the stress on the bags themselves … and perhaps on the bolts too?

- Until then, will back up existing washers with larger washers

- Considered drilling 3rd hole in the fender to add another bolt but another holes in the bags might would probably them weaker and cause more problem than it solves.

> Grade 12 bolts are pretty robust. But they've been breaking, too.
While Grade 12.9 have the highest mechanical ratings on the chart you show, are there other considerations i.e. vibrations, impact, etc? It’s unclear but online conversations seem to imply the higher the grade is more brittle and therefore more likely break instead of bend when stressed. It also implies that it all depends on the application and other related parts in the design. Is grade 12.9 the best choice for our saddlebag mounts? I am not an engineer and have no idea.

> Does this suggest a regular maintenance schedule to replace bolts after so many months of installation?
> If regular swapping out of the bolts is wise (what the USAF called a time-change item: an item would simply be changed out after "X" amount of time used, period) then I would be curious of tracking exactly what kind of damage is regularly seen on the old bolts.
Riding with a bag hanging by a single bolt is scary. Suggest replacing one bolt at a time. That way, all 4 (or at least both on one side) will be less likely to fail at the same time.

> Are they being crushed? Cut or sawed in half? Do they look snapped or broken? RoadRunner were your bolts broken, sawed/cut, or crushed?
Thought I had all the broken ones, but the most recent as shown in photo looks like a pretty clean break IMHO. All 3 have broken in about the same spot, about where the bolt is flush with the fender (which is why it had to be drilled out, there was nothing to grab onto when it snapped.)

Another thing a wonder about is why have I lost 3 bolts on the same side but none on the other? Both bolts start okay and screw in smoothly. In fact, last time I took off the bags, a bolt on the non-breaking side was a real bear to start and screw in. It expect it will need to be re-threaded.

>If so why do the factory installed bags seem to be spared from this issue? Are the designers of bikes that come from the factory with bags included using larger bolts than aftermarket, add-on bags use?
I don’t see how length can be shortened at all. Although it is holding temporarily, I’d feel better with that grommet and washer.

Can bolt thickness be changed since they screw into the fender. Easy Brackets appear to use different (thicker? shorter? bolts to mount into the same holes in the fender but I do not know those details. Before drilling holes for the Viking provided hardware, I contacted Easy Brackets to see where to drill the holes for their product. I was hoping I could install the Viking hardware with holes that would also accommodate Easy Brackets, if I wanted to later. Unfortunately, Easy Brackets couldn’t/wouldn’t provide this information since Viking bags that are not Made in the USA.

> Am I making any sense?
Yes. We all seem to have more questions than answers but nice to hear the issue is on someone’s radar as well.…ok, everyone’s but Viking’s

The bags are look and function great but we have all been -
a) Nickel-and-dimed replacing bolts, washers, shop labor etc,

b) Treated poorly by Viking’s customer support. $7 for a barrel bolt is less than 2% of what I paid for the bags. Plus the part out of stock anyway. $7 versus how much in bad public relations !

c) Left wondering will the bags might fall off on this ride or the next (Otherwise I love my 900 … and still take the Vulcan 500 out too !)

On the plus side, as far as I know, no one has been injured (yet) because of this. I would hate to see this happen and I doubt Viking would change anyhow.

If anyone has an extra Kawasaki grommets and washers or barrel bolts from Viking…..I’d be happy to buy them from you.

THANKS !

>One thing I'd look into is why your grommets keep falling out.
That one is easy. Once the bolt breaks, there is nothing to keep the grommets from wiggling out from road vibrations.

>Regardless, there is something hokey about yours breaking so many. That is way outside of the norm.
"RoadRunner" comes from the 10k+ miles/year I put on my bike. I live 50 mi from the nearest grocery store and usually do at least 3-4k mi/yr touring. Maybe I am having more issues since I do use the bike and bags more often then "the norm."

> I just got in, yesterday, new, different styled, brackets for my bags.
Curious, what did you go with?

Thanks for your thoughts

>Please forgive me if I upset you with the following question.
No worries, glad for your thoughts and time

> Are you certain the bags are not overloaded, weight-wise?
Carry stuff on a rack also to keep bags only 1/2 full in volume.
Viking says no more than 11 lbs/bag. Probably under that limit putting in mostly stuff I wouldn't want stolen (camera) or that I want easy access to (snacks, maps).

> In other words, don't extend outward too far?
Mounted as per Viking specs and not really many options anyhow. People say Easy Brackets also hold bags "fairly far out" from bike.

> side-to-side comparison.
Harley's are a dime a dozen. Sadly, haven't seen too many 900's around. In shops in SA, bags usually do not have bags mounted on them. Looking at standard Kawi bags and mounts, they are also held on by 2-bolts on top.

> The bolts themselves are substandard / Wrong grade bolts are used.
More research to be done on this......

> What are the road conditions of where you regularly ride?
I avoid gravel like the plague ! Mostly nice, smooth pavement.

> Is there an abnormal amount of pressure being placed on top of the bags during day-to-day use?
Nope, I don't touch the bags more than I have to. Never ride 2-up so I removed tiny passenger portion of seat to make room for rack. Rack holds tent/sleeping bag etc above bags i.e. does not touch bags or put any pressure on them.

> The bolts are not being tightened enough during installation
No torque wrench or specs but "tight enough to stay on, not too much torque to snap them." I check them regularly too, not much slip.

This might be a better bolt.
Listed at $20 each they should be !

Got the part number straight from Kawi's saddle bag support kit : Item 20 on Page 1 of above install instructions
https://www.kawasaki.com/accessories/item/saddlebag-support-kit/K999940069A
https://www.kawasaki.com/Content/Uploads/Accessories/K999940069A/ii_K999940069A.pdf

Sadly enough, the grommet/washer I am looking for do not have a part number but on the last page are just to the right of the bolt (item 20).

What to do?

Viking Bags basically told me to pound dirt since I bought them from MotorcycleHouse.com not Viking bags. I figured they were the same since they have the same chat help, and both sites list the same Brea, CA address as home base. Even if I bought them directly from their site, I get the feeling the end result would be the same.

Posted a review with the Better Business Bureau. Not surprisingly, they are not a BBB approved business. BBB shows multiple complaints and negative review for which they have not responded. https://www.bbb.org/sdoc/business-reviews/online-retailer/viking-bags-in-brea-ca-172013575

All I asked them for as $14 worth of hardware instead of threatening them with return, lawyers or anything else. Nice bags, crummy hardware and even worse customer service.

Disappointing :<

LOL....to be clear, I am laughing with you, not at you.

On the surface, screwing in 2 bolts should be a breeze. Yet I struggled with it on my Vulcan 500 and again on the 900. Somehow, over time, I managed master the balancing act, learned to grease the bolts to get them started, squirt them with Loctite and secure them without sweating to death or being devoured by too many mosquitoes.

Ordered 2 new collars yesterday but they won't be in until hit the road this week. Decided a stack of 1-M10 and 2-M8 washers will provide some strength and the needed spacing from the belt guard until I catch up with the ordered collars and rubber washers in Reno. Not perfect but better than nada. Tomorrow, I will re-install the one bag and see how the spacing looks.

As for strength, I have at least 2 Class 8.8's and one Class 12.9's. Might be a neat little experiment to use one of each. By random choice, I'll put the 8.8 on the front and the 12.9 on the rear. It's not "true conditions" since I am not using the actual collars but I won't have them before I leave.

Scientifically speaking, I should run the both until one fails. Realistically, I hope like heck to NOT reach the point where a bolt fails. Sorry all...even if it is for research purposes. After the first 900 miles, I'll put a new 12.9 on the front and a new 8.8 on the rear. Maybe while I ride all those miles, I'll come up with a safer way to assess the amount of stress on those 2 bolts without endangering my well-being or that of those I am sharing the road.

DEEPEST THANKS for all the input and advice on this topic.
It's nice to know someone cares (even if it is not Viking Bags!)

Texas Hill Country

Google "3 Sisters" or "Twisted Sisters"
FM 335, 336 and 337 is what gives the Hill Country its name

Vanderpool, Leakey, Camp Wood are the highlights
Save the drinking for after the ride;
Bandera is not on the 3 Sisters but the nightlife is not to be missed !

Bags made it 2k miles to reno fine.
Will modify bags this week, head back south the following week.

Thanks for the concern and info.
Will report back upon my return

In the end, I decided to replace the bolts every 2k+ miles.
And stick with the highest grade.

I would also like to add
1) a strap to add extra support for the lids when open
2) replace the locks with the type on my LeatherLykes or even pickup fuel door that is essentially a stick that keeps the lid from opening. The current locks suck in that they are hard to engage and dont; seal very tightly. In all this rain, I had inches of water in one of the bags recently :<

Thanks everyone for helping me think this one through !

Bolts still breaking despite replacing them at regular intervals as preventative measure. Will post a picture of the pile of the broken bolts ASAP.

Re-read entire thread and re-think issue.
RickD has a good point about installation issue versus bolt issue. Eager to see Splat's pix of his install.

And thank you VN750guy and everyone else for the input and learning experience.

Just in case you were wondering, Vulcans aren't the only one with this issue.
It's time Viking does something to remedy this; would LawTigers be able to help?

BTW, Viking Bags and Motorcycle House are 'sister companies.' Motorcycle House's website is closed until 'further notice' so that is a dead end if you need any support from them..not that Viking Bags offers any support even when they are open.

Here is are some of the sheared bolts from over the years. Unbroken bolt at bottom of each for reference.

The bolts were about 6 3/4 cm long.

About 2 years ago, I replaced them with slightly thicker bolts. Have not had an issue since.

Note, this is not really conclusive since I haven't ridden any the many thousand miles tours I put the old bags and bolts through.

Still stand by the bags themselves but the locking and mounting hardware SUCK!
