Ok. I removed the rear fender last night. It was a piece of cake.
1. Remove seat
2. Remove tool kt / battery cover
3. Disconnect rear wiring harness
4. Unscrew seat lock mechanism
5. Remove fender covers
6. Remove fender bolts (it helps to hold the rear of fender when you remove the last bolt)
7. Let fender slip down to rest on tire
8. Slide fender out (staying under the fender supports)
Once I did all of that I flipped the fender over to get access to the underside of the brake light housing. But that didn't really get me access to the wiring I needed. I flipped the fender back over and removed the license plate light cover. Bingo. All the connections to the brake, turn signals, and license plate light are right there. And then I felt stupid for removing the fender.

But now I know how to remove the fender, and I now know how to get access to the all the rear lighting connections.
