I was planning to wrap my exhaust until I spoke with an experienced motorcycle mechanic in my area. He strongly advised against doing so, his reasoning being that the pipes would eventually rust as a result of doing so. On the flip side, many people whose opinions I respect on this forum have wrapped theirs (including Racnray). My engineering mind is telling me that if moisture did get into the wrap it would dry out in no time from the extreme heat of the exhaust.

I would appreciate comments from anyone who has previously wrapped pipes on a bike and ran them on the street for a long period of time. What was your experience? Did you ever experience rust out of the wrapped pipes? Thanks in advance for any input.

I would make sense that if the wrap is hydroscopic that it will dry out with engine heat. How about the damp / wet days / weeks when the bike isn't being ridden, moisture is trapped in the wrap and held in intimate contact with the metal? Sound like a possible formula for corrosion to me. Guess if you're in AZ or someplace with very low humidity it wouldn't be much of a concern. Here in IL I wouldn't try it.
