2001 vulcan 800 classic with 26k. A valve broke in the front cylinder crushing the spark plug. Have not looked at the rear cylinder yet. Bike was purchased last year with 14k and has been maintained by the dealer. Oil was changed a week prior and is still full.
My question. What could have happened inside the engine to cause this and is it worth spending the money to rebuild the engine or part it out.

The valves in the 800 are mechanical, not hydraulic. They must be adjusted or have clearances checked every 6000 miles. The fact that the dealer serviced the bike means nothing. Adjusting valves takes tim and they usually dont want to spend the time doing it, so they just charge you for it. Sad but true. Repairs depends on the damage done. When an engine swallowsd a valve it usually causes lots of dammage. Top of piston, cylinder head, possible cylinder wall damage. You gotta take it apart to find out. If the engine wasnt screaming when it let go and it shut down imeadialtly, you might be lucky. Good Luck
