I will be changing the oil on my 2004 Vulcan 500 for the first time. How can I remove the dipstick? Must I unscrew it? I tried it by hand, and it absolutely will not budge. Thanks.

Not 100% sure about your year, but the pre 1996 models do not have a dipstick, only a sight glass.

It's just a oil cap. The 500 doesn't have a dipstick. And yes it unscrews. You check the oil level by holding the bike level and checking the oil level in the sight glass.

I apologize, you guys are correct; there's no dipstick, but a small window showing the oil level. So how much oil would I need? Enough to go about halfway up the oil level window?

Half way is always good. If you change the filter use 3.2 US qts.which converts to 3 qts and 6 oz. If you use your old filter use 3 US qts.
