On a 900 custom....

I was running shaft drive and this is my first "flexible drive method" since my Dad & grandparents had chains back in the 70's, 80's and 90's

The owners manual says take it to your dealer.. um nope..
How much belt deflection is there supposed to be on the 900 custom??
How much does there need to be "minimum" ,otherwise its too tight?

Eventually I'll need to know....How much is too much deflection?
When do you know belt is toast?
I can measure it next to a 12" ruler if needed.

I am a boiler operator and run belt driven machinery for a living

According the '06 manual:
Drive Belt Deflection (with 45 N, 4.6 kgf, 10 lb force)
Standard: 1.5 ∼ 4.0 mm (0.059 ∼ 0.16 in.)

thanks
that's just a bit more than 1/8" (.125)
not much difference between too tight and too loose

I had a honda shadow with a shaft and while I was happy about not having to worry about it, I find that I like the belt drive much better.

Recently had new tires put on and was concerned a little about mechanic getting tension right on the belt. So far it's doing great!
