Dcrew,

The diagram is EXACTLY how I wired a Baron 3" Bullet Tach on my '03 800 Classic - which is a dual-fire ignition.

The Vulcan 900 IS a single-fire ignition, so I would bet you would need the adapter.

Sad as it sounds, since I'm a 900 owner too, wouldn't it be a big tease to put a tach on that goes to 15000rpms? :)

In actuality though, I've been thinking of adding a tach too, so I'll be interested to see what input you get about this one!

Put one of these from Demon Cycles on my 900 a couple of years ago, (except the 8K RPM version,) and it DID need the single fire adapter. It's worked flawlessly for 2 years and still going.

I also have the Cobra tachometer. Absolutely 0 needle bounce and looks great. No adapter needed for this tachometer. I've had Baron tach's on other bikes and they look nice byt most have needle bounce and they DO require the adapter to work on the *9*
