After much research and deliberation,I've decided to try this darkside thing.I ordered a 195/60 Bridgestone Turanza EL 400.

Supposed to be here by wed,so hopefully I can get it mounted and tested next weekend if I don't have to work.

To be honest,I'm concerned about my 4 1/2" rim width being an inch skinnier than the minimum recommended for a 195,but this specific tire and size is one that I've read a lot of people say they're using on their 1600 Classics with great results.

Got the tire today.Read the Gadget article on how to remove the rear tire from the bike.

Any tips or things to look out for when I dig into it?

Sadly,I don't have a bike jack anymore,just 3 floor jacks,a big bottle jack,a couple factory scissor jacks from cars,and various thicknesses of wood blocks

Sure hope with those,and some good ol' ingenuity,I can figure out a way to git 'er done

Just a FYI, off and on went easy for me, but what took the longest was trying to bead up the new tire. The motorcycle rim has a larger bead lock then the car rim. Polish the inside of the rim and apply lots of lube to the rim and tire. Now start adding air, mine took 100 psi to bead bringing the pressure up and releasing multiple times.

From a safety and convenience point of view WAIT until you can get a bike jack and a Idaho Jack adaptor. Don't ask me how I know it triggers the PTSD,

I got the stock wheel/bald tire off.I borrowed a bike jack but it was still kind of an adventure getting it high enough to get the wheel out.I ended up letting all the air out to try to make it a little easier to squeeze out the last little bit.

As tight of a fit as the stock 170 was,I just don't see how this 195 is possibly gonna fit.There was tons of room on the right side,but there was barely enough room to get my pinky finger between the tire and driveshaft.

It'll probably be next weekend before I can get the car tire mounted and try to stuff it back in there

Got 'er done,woo-hoo!

Now just gotta wait till I can try it out

I'll report back with results after my first ride or two

They didn't have any trouble at all getting the car tire swapped and the bead seated

Glad to hear it went well. You might need to play with the tire pressure to find that sweet spot for handling and ride.

First ride report:

Absolutely awesome!

Not only did it NOT take any getting used to,but it actually handles BETTER in every situation so far.Twisties,rough roads,taking off from a dead stop with the handlebar at full lock,tight u-turns,practicing countersteering to instantly whip around manhole covers in town,cruising at 80 mph(true 80,not what the speedo says is 80).It even seemed to be a cushier ride too.

I think I'll just stick with 36 psi since it works so well

I'm truly amazed,I'm a darksider for life

Be prepared to hear from all the people who have not tried it that it's dangerous and you'll kill yourself no matter how much better it feels.

I know what you mean.I've seen it a million times while researching the topic.To be honest,I felt that way when I first started hearing about the idea.I thought it was suicide talk,lol.

After doing a ton of research though,I changed my tune.Now that I've begun experiencing it for myself,I can't imagine NOT rolling this way (Pun intended)

Put the Nexen on this morning. What a ride!! Could hardly tell the difference between a Mt and CT. Went up to 90 and smooth as silk. Took several on and off ramps just like I did with the MT did just as good or better. Don't think I will ever go back to a MT after this. Worked just fine at 36 psi. The back absorbed the bumps a lot better, real smooth.

Got the Nexen tire on and man am I happy with it !! Rode the interstate up to 90 mph and did several on and off ramps. It did better than the MT in all circumstances!! Don't think I will ever go back to a MT.
