A buddy and I are discussing a trip from here in Iowa to the Smoky Mountains this summer. Probably in July. We both will be traveling 2 up with our wives. None of us has ever been in this area previously.

It appears that the closest point for us to start the tour would be in Townsend or Pigeon Forge area. Some one suggested we stay in Sweetwater the first night and then go from there. Sweetwater is about 775 miles from here.

For you riders that live in that area or those who have made the trip, do you have any suggestions. We are obviously looking for reasonable lodging. With the women along we will be staying in motels. It will be a 2 day trip each way and we'll probably have 3 days to ride in the Smokey Mt. area.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

Pigeon forge and Gatlinburg are tourist hotspots. Bad traffic, but lots of hotels and eateries. Try the Old Mill or any resturant at Apple Farms. The Alamo also has great Prime Rib. Cades Cove is the big loop though the park. Eat, fill up on gas, and use the bath room before the trip. All, or some of those needs are not available.

Head out of Gatlinburg to Cherokee, eat Indian Food and Gamble. Next, make your way to Deals Gap and ride the Tail of the Dragon.

The blue ridge parkway is a good ride, and there are some real nice places north, Boone, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mtn.

Enjoy NC, my home state!

You should dpo the loop. Leave Iowa, head to the skyline drive(Front Royal, Va) Do that 600 miles down to Gatlinburg, ride the smokeys, and end up back in Iowa. It would be a great week or 2!
