Has anyone in the state of Missouri had any issues with using a Side Mounted License Plate? I can't find any reference to this other than the basic drivers manual. In there is says 'If you have a trailer or a motorcycle, you will only receive one plate, which must be on the back of your vehicle.'I have seen MO bikes with side mounted plates, but I have read several forum comments saying that in some states they are illegal.

A google search turns up a few Missourians complaining about getting hassled for a side mount plate, so I would guess they are illegal there.

It's illegal here in Illinois too, even if the plate is horizontal.

this is from a higway patrol friend of mine. (also a long time rider)

Yes, to be legal it is required to be displayed horizontally and clearly visible (not hidden behind the rear tire, bent up, or mounted under seat facing down at the rear tire). There is also a lighting requirement that says the plate has to be visible from 50 feet at night.

If you don't meet these requirements, it doesn't mean that every police officer is going to stop you for it. Just know that it is possible.
