Doing a 3000-mile tour in June. Would like to upgrade the stock seat. Are there significant differences between Mustang, Corbin, or whatever other brand I might want to consider?

Particular features we should consider? (Exp - I've ridden 4-5 hours in a day without a driver backrest and felt fine, but I've never done 3 back-to-back 8-10 hour days.)

Do most people prefer vinyl or leather? I like the idea of leather, but understand that vinyl sheds water better.

I have had Mustang on a 900 and Ultimate on a 2000. I will probably choose the Ultimate again because it has a 2 piece seat for the Nomad. I liked both, but the Ultimate was the best and most comfortable.

Thanks. I looked at their website, and it's not clear if their $525 combo is vinyl or leather - which do you have? Do you have the driver backrest, and is it worth the extra $225?

Everyone is different but, IMHO, the drivers backrest is worth it's weight in gold. In addition to supporting your back, it gives you something to lean against to rest your legs on the highway pegs which takes weight off of your rear end.

If you've got a flexible budget; one seat to look into is a Russel Day-Long. People who own them say it's simply the best seat in the world; and I've never seen a bad review. You can get it in vinyl or leather. Or even a mix. It's a custom seat made to your specific shape and dimensions, and it's built off of your stock seat (so you'll need to send them your stock seat).

I asked them about the difference between Vinyl and Leather. They told me comfort wise, both are pretty much the same. The leather is a little more supple, and riders who wear thinner pants might notice the difference. If you wear thick jeans, riding pants, etc., you probably won't be able to tell. But, vinyl is more waterproof. So, there's some food for thought!

I've always had good luck with Mustang saddles.

Mine is leather. I do not have the backrest. I don't like them...

Good luck. Some people go through every seat made before finding one that works for them. The Russel Day Long will probably be themes comfortable while riding, but if you are shorter in the leg department, you won't like when you have to put a leg down.
Corbin, mustang, etc.will always have some that swear by them and others that hate them.

I know some bikes have stock seats that are really bad, but I was on the bike for a couple hours today, and the stock seat is not bad on the 2014 Nomads. Can anyone give me a feel for just how much better an aftermarket seat is? I'd hate to spend $500-750 for a 10% improvement.

If you were on it for a couple of hours and could not wait to get off because your butt or back were killing you save the money. If the seat were an issue you would know it by now.

Usually if bike ergonomics are going to be an issue you can tell within an hour of continuous nonstop riding. The seat is almost always the first thing to bite you in the butt and the wallet if it does not agree with you.

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. We're all different.

What issues did you have after a couple of hours? Most off-the-shelf aftermarket seats are flatter and much firmer. Soft is nice for the first 30 minutes but firm is what you want after that. So it won't feel as cushy as stock; but can solve issues like tailbone pain and numbness that can occur from not having enough support.

It's tough to say. Some seats can be returned if it's not an improvement. Some don't like the firmness of aftermarket seats. That's really what makes them kind of a gamble. I like my Mustang seat; but others don't!

Try an Airhawk cushion. doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Easy removal. Many swear by it. Ride for a 100mi with it on, then off for a 100. Don't like it? You can easily sell it. Had a mustang regal but didn't like it. Had an ultimate seat I loved but the backrest was too low. Kept the original seat and added a utopia backrest. Best ever. Also added beads to the seat.
