I rode a Vulcan900 for 10 years so I'm used to a water cooled bike, but when I got my Vaquero I was immediately surprised by how much heat the 1700 generates. The 900 does not have a temp gage so I don't know how much fluctuation is normal for this engine. In my car the gage quickly settles just below the1/2 mark and stays there. On the Vaquero the gage never seems to settle. Riding in 70F weather it hangs around the 1/4 mark, but stop for a red light and it's near the Hot mark by the time the light turns green. The fan comes on and it's never gone into the red, but I'm curious about other's experience.

The 1700 runs hot ,thats normal.
There are a couple things that you can do,
1. get it Ivanized, search on this forum about Ivan . He remaps the E C U so that the fans come on sooner and a lot of other stuff.
2. There is something you can put in the antifreese ,I think its called liquid ice or something like that.

I'm planning on switching to engine ice this summer but my concern was how much the needle swings up and down. Ivan is out of my price range for the time being. I'm hoping to do that mod this winter.

Ah, yes, its a coolant unto itself and not an additive.

There may be something as you ask but I personally have never heard of an additive for coolant.

The variations you see in the temp gauge is normal, using a different coolant and/or Ivanizing may reduce the temperature reading but you will still see the big variations, depending on vehicle speed.
Contrary to what many riders post, the 1700 does not run hot. It is thermostatically controlled to operate between 62C and 95C, completely normal for a liquid cooled engine. The bike design does cause heat from the radiator and engine and exhaust to be directed at the rider and they think the bike is running hot, but unless you see coolant spewing out the overflow tube the engine is operating exactly as Kawasaki designed it.

Saddle heat shields work great on my nomad. Make the ride a lot quieter and they look good too. Easy to install. Grateful mod. 135 bucks.

This what I was looking for. Interesting note: I checked sevice manuals for my 1700 and 900 and I was surprised to see that the thermostat opens at 62C on both bikes. Thanks for the info.

Ya, the 1700 actually runs 5C cooler than vn900, and 15C cooler than vn1600 bikes. Voyager is the first Vulcan to have a full fairing and a temperature gauge to look at and it makes owners think the engine is running hot.
Remove the fairing lowers for summer riding, and put duct tape over that gauge and there will be no more complaints! :)

Hey, yeah when I bought my last Voyager last year that was the first thing I asked the mechanic at the dealer after I took it out for a test spin. It was a little nerve racking watching the needle on the temp gauge at one notch from the red sitting in traffic.
Anyway everyone is correct that is normal. When you can afford to do so the Ivan flash is highly recommended it not only helps the engine run cooler but it also does a lot more.

Until then even though I already have the flash during the summer it still gets a little warm between the legs especially at a stop even with the Kawasaki heat management system. Update: I traded messages with Tim at HarleyHeatShields (Ebay). He confirmed that this is available in black and fits our Voyagers...and is not an overseas knockoff that may or may not fit. He did say he is on vacation and would not be able to ship until mid June....not a problem for me as I am booked for June and doing minimal riding. I have those on my bike and I like them. Good heat reduction, good fitment and look like original.

Thanks for the pic! Maybe I'll take a ride down to Tandy Leather and see what it would cost to make one. Although I have to say, $30 is pretty reasonable.

With tax, it turned into $37. Still pretty good deal. I will give some feedback when I get it and ride with it for a while.

I have an aluminum & leather set from rtm same price, fit well, look really good & cool. Hadn't thought about insulating under the seat itself tho. Good idea.

I will order these as well. One other thing that might help is this. Remember the wood ball seat covers people used to have in there cars? I put one on a tractor one day as a joke. It was amazing. It lets the air under your but so you don't sweat with leather seat. It was so much cooler I left them on. They still make them for bikes. They are black and you can purchase these from Amazon, ebay, or walmart.com for about 15 bucks

I will need to try this to help with the heat! I commute on my vaquero and due to road construction i get stuck daily for 15-20 minutes going less than 15 mph. I just got my bike Ivan, it helped but my junk is still getting warmer then i like.
