I did a search, but didn't really find anything specific. I'm going on a trip in June (9,500 miles) and looking for a high-mileage rear tire. My main concern is getting the most possible miles out of my tires. I heard that there were new tires that last longer than the ones even a few years ago, but haven't found anything concrete.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

if you have enough time to get use to it id recommend doing the darkside. grabbing a car tire to put on it. the last one i used up i got 15000 miles out of it and i abused the hell out of it with burn outs and a ton of mountain riding.most rear motorcycle tires i have ran i only get about 5-6k out of em before they are shot. im about to go out and do a bit of work on the bike ill post back later the brand and size of tire i use its pretty good for all weather riding handles pretty good in the wet and dry. for a front id recomend the perrelli night dragon line i had one that held up pretty strong. i had a crack form in it down the center of it about 3 inchs long a about 1cm wide. still held for another 300 miles till i limped it home. pretty sturdy tire.

I don't think anyone makes a touring tire for these. But some people downsize to a Dunlop Touring Elite. They come in 180/60/16 and 180/70/16 (GoldWing & Valkyrie) . I think the 70 maintains the same ride height as the stock tire.
But I went Darkside years ago, 40,000 miles on Goodyear Tripletred, 30,000 miles on my current General Altimax with a hundred burnouts. But the General Altimax handles much more normal, very MC like.

just did a Goldwing tire search, not everyone likes the Elite 3. The Metzler 880 seems good, do a google Goldwing tire search and see what you like.

Between various tires on my crotch rocket and the VN2K, I have not found one that lasts materially longer than any other (except for Darkside on the VN2K).

For the crotch rocket I can find softer tires that wear out more quickly but I'm talking about a sport/touring tire in that regard, not a road race/track tire.

It seems the biggest factors in tire life are loaded weight, pressure, type of road surface, and your right wrist. The tire itself, darkside notwithstanding, is the smallest player, IMO.

I put 8 M/C tires on my V2K before I went dark. The one that lasted the longest was the Battlax. The M880s would last about 4000kms (2500 mi) and the Battlax lasted about 6000 kms (4000mi). I don't hot dog or do burnouts but the roads here aren't the best. I also tried the Dunlop but it was too small. I use an Avon on the front, so far 8000kms on this one. The original Battlax lasted 11000kms on the front. We pay lots out here for M/C tires, over $400 for a new rear, and then about $200 for dismount, mount, and balance. And that is with me taking the wheel off the bike, hauling it down there and hauling it back. Two or three tires in a long season is pricey.... even if you get one of them at Sturgis:surprise:

did i get that right, you pay $200.00!!! to have a tire removed, fitted and balanced and you only give them the wheel.. do they keep the tire. in new zealand the local dump charges about $4.00 to dump a tire. i own a vn2000 and run a motorcycle repair business. to remove , fit new tire and balance (tubless) about 15 minutes . if that is what the bike shops are charging ?????? try a car tire shop. wheel only no more difficult to fit than a car tire.. balancing maybe an issue but you can do that yourself with the axle and some weights. do you know what their hourly rate is?

No competition here for Honda Dealership. They charge what they want. There is one tire shop that has a machine that will work on bike rims but he is worried about liability issues. I went dark a few years ago and won't go back to M/C tires. Worse comes to worse, I can pop a car tire off myself old school and balance with a bar and a set of bearings.... Nearest Kawi dealer is 2.5 hrs away at speed, and he charges $100 for an R/R and balance (wheel assembly hauled in by owner...) I still take my front in and have the dealership do it, but I get a year out of a front M/C tire.

Just take the wheel in and tell them its for a home built trailer, that should take care of the liability thing.
Tho all tires are different when mounting, on average I've found the Dark is no harder to mount with hand tools th
an MC tires.

I tried every MC tire I could find (Dunlop, Avon, Metzler to name a few) and never got more than 3k miles out of them...no burnouts, no extreme riding. Went DS on a Nitto NT450 225/50/16...and have LOVED it. I've logged about 5k on it and haven't seen the first sign of ANY wear.

went darkside after 3 tires and 25,000 km here in Alberta Canada. Got just about 40,000 km on the rear, and just changed it a month ago. Hoping for another 40,000 km (about 25,000 miles). I use a nicely rounded shoulder profile tire from a Canadian outfit up here.... 205/60-16 Motomaster SE3 and love this new one. Feels way better than the last, and I seriously would challenge any experienced rider to take it for a rip and know any different. great tire. I change myself, and my tire shop charges me $15 to swap out old for new rubber on rims. Good luck!
