I have a 900 Custom and ride solo most always. I weigh 195 lbs. and have noticed the bike will bottom out on some bumps in the road. This is with the setting stock at the fourth setting. I now have it reset to the next to last setting but have not had it bottom out. What has every one found to work for them?

this is a alot to do but when i ride alone i go down 2 notches when she is on with me i adjust to the top we are not big people but i ride fast and the stiffer suspension makes a huge difference in handling and if i forget to adjust it up before she rides she lets me know all about it trust me!

Just wondering don't u have air shocks on the 900.......Usually air with dampening set on the dial......is yours different....Terry

I have mine at the factory setting and I weight about 205 and mine has never bottom out. I ride two up very often and even with both of us the bike has never bottom out.
Did you lower your bike?

I weigh about 178 and I took one notch of preload out of the rear. Comparing the front to the rear, the rear seemed too stiff to me. These things don't have a lot of suspension travel anyway, especially at the rear.

I'm a big guy...about 230 and the Mrs is around 190...my bike is at the factory setting (I think it is 4th one) and we have never bottomed out. With both of us on, it rides like a caddy.

No the bike has not been lowered. The ride we did last Sun. was on some real bumpy back roads out in the country. I now have the setting on the fifth one instead of the fourth which is stock. Will be doing a long ride this Sun. close to 300 miles some back roads. This should give me a good idea if this setting will work better.

I don't have a user manuel. And the shock isn't numbered, what is considered to be 1 and what is 6 (or whatever the last setting would be)

I tried to adjust mine before with the tool in the kit, but it would barely turn. Do you have to have the bike up on a lift to take some of the load off?

No, I don't think you have to have the bike on a lift, though it might make access a little easier if you did.

I tried adjusting mine when I first got it, to try and make it a bit stiffer for riding two-up. I could barely get it to turn either. So when I took it back to HP (my local dealer) for the first oil change/maint check, I asked them to adjust it for me. The mechanic said it's not that hard to do, but also pointed out to me that there are TWO such tools in the 900 tool kit, and one of them definitely works better for this than the other. I must have grabbed the first one I saw and it was the wrong wrench. Try it with both of them and see if it gets any easier...

Man using a channel locks, I would be afraid of slipping and gouging things.

When you use the tool you need to use the peace that looks like a tube that is flatened. Just slip it over the adjuster tool . This will make it easer to use. Hope this helps.

Hello all. So since I am a big hoss that would help my Vulcan ride a bit better? I am a new rider. Went on about a oh, 40 mile ride or so on my classic today. I have had the bike almost 3 months or so. The ride was a bit rough, so would this smooth things out a bit? I am 5'11", 260 lbs.

The stock setting is 4 out of 7, and according to the manual is for an "average" rider of 150 pounds. Clearly, this "average" is for a Japanese male, not an American mael.

I weigh 186, probably 195 ish with clothing, boots, jacket, helmet. I set mine to 5 out of 7, and it's an improvement. There are railroad tracks near my house and when I went over them with the stock setting I got bounced out of my seat. On setting 5 it is still stiff, but not jarring. This bike is not a Road King so I don't expect a cushy ride, but I'd recommend those looking for a better ride go up a notch or two on the monoshock until they find what works best for them.

2 up w/ gear in the bags I've got nearly 400 lbs on my custom. Have never bottomed out. I'm set one softer than stock.

Setting more preload is easy using the stock tools, but letting off is more difficult because of the shape of the notches. I bent the heck out of one of the stock wrenches before I put it up on a jack and tried. Works much better with the rear wheel off the ground.
