Well, not sure if it's the best way, but after lowering my wife's Drifter 800, I took her side stand to a shop and they cut & welded it. They did a nice job (looks good), and it's been problem free for about 4 years now. I sprayed some clear lacquer on it since the weld can rust, and it's been clean as a whistle the entire time.

Depending on how much you lower it, you may not need to do anything. The stock kickstand on my Voyager is short and create a very heavy feel when I tried to take it off the sidestand. I switched tot he VN1500 sidestand and it's perfect. Check it out before you cut it.
