I have put this thread under General Talk, but thought I would put it here as well as a 'belt and braces' approach to catch as many views as poss.
2009 - 1700 V. Nomad with 4,270 UK miles, showing a return of 25.2 mpg under conservative riding.
Stock pipes and air filter.
Bike hasn't run since Sept. as it's been sitting in a Dealers showroom.
Any ideas?

My Voyager gets around 32-34 running 70 mph, 42-46 running 60, as most roads I ride the speed limit is 60, on the 55 mph roads I get 48-52 I use 6th gear 99 percent of the time.

Crank it to 80 plus.... then it will get 25 mph...

So are you saying you do not own it and are going by someone else s info about the mileage? Or your scoot has been in the shop since Sept.... Or ?

There are several threads in here about the mileage..... or lack thereof from what some people expect. I have no problem with the MPG I am getting. It is not bad at all.

By the way I get gas right now for 1.89 a gal here in central Texas...

My 2012 Voyager gained about 4-5mpg once it had a few 1000 miles on it, getting around 40 riding easy, 36-37 on the highway running70-75. When I 1st got it with 0.3 miles, I was getting 32-35. With you being in the UK, is that 25 miles per liter or gallon? If liter, would think thats great.

Hi, the bike was in a dealers when I saw it on e- bay in September ( I was in Orlando at the time ), but didn't put an offer in until winter was well upon us, to try to get a deal. This worked out ok as I saved £500 ( approx. $850 ) so worth the wait. It was deliverd on the 3 rd Dec, but due to inclement weather, I haven't been able to get out, until today, Sunday 11th. Went over 80 mph a couple of times - to try out 6th gear - but only for a mile or two, rest of the time hovering around the 50, 60, 70 mark. At 25 mpg I'm only gonna get 100 miles to a tank. I was hoping to tour Northern Spain this summer. ( my other bike is a Yamaha FJR13, clutch less). 25 mpg isn't a deal breaker but at approx. $2 per.litre ($9 per UK gal.) and the FJ returning an easy 47 mpg holding a steady 90 mph, something needs to be done. I am hoping that a K&N filter + V&H slip on's + power commander will improve matters.
I'm still hoping there's a temporary glitch in the electrics which will iron out as the bike gets used. 25 mpg can't be right.

Thanks, Bubba. This is good info for us newbies. I was riding with my bro-in-law heading into the wind at 75-80 mph on I-80 in Nevada when his Nomad 1700 ran out of gas in what seemed an abnormally short distance. Is the frontal area of the big windshields what makes them such wind anchors? I was on my Griso, doing better than his Nomad. Wondering if I should take a jigsaw to my Nomad's windshield? Most of my bikes are "naked."

It would be absolutely wonderful.. 25 Liters x 3.78 Liters/ US Gallon = 94.5 MPG
I rode around the Great lakes in Canada last Aug. Gas was $1.599 per Liter.

I have a 2011 1700 Nomad. I average 42 miles per gallon with a combination of city and highway driving. I have never seen less than 40 mpg per tank no matter what I do. I do not accelerate rapidly and I drive normally. Usually at the speed limit. My bike is stock with the exception of a K & N air filter.

Hey Barnowl - where in the UK are you?

I've got a 2009 Nomad with V&N's, PC5 and Kuryakyn Alley Cat air cleaner. This gives me about 42 mpg when riding briskly, so about 180+ miles to a tank if I take it to vapour, but I usually try to fill up between 160 and 170 miles when the fuel light's flashing so I don't get caught out. Friend of mine on the same bike with V&H, K&N but no PC is returning about 10 mpg more, so he's getting well over 200 miles to a tank.

Hi ChrisC. Iam in the Warrington Cheshire area, a couple of miles from Haydock Race Park:
40 mpg would do me very nicely....if I could get it. To be fair to the bike, I haven't personally done enough miles yet on it ( only 30 so far) to say that 25 mpg is normal.
Just ordered a K&N. Are you and your mate riding with the tall windshield?
Are the VH pipes worth the money? Did you get your bike dyno'd after you fitted the PCV and did you see any significant improvement after fitting?

We've both got the standard screens on, and mine's at the highest setting as I'm 6'1".

I think the V&H pipes are worth the money and they seem to be the popular choice here! I know three 1700 Nomads and at least one Voyager with them on! Didn't get the bike dyno'd as a guy on here with similar mods kindly shared his maps with me. I can email them to you if you get the PC5 and they're easy to upload.

In terms of consumption I didn't ever check when the bike was standard, so I can't comment on how much the drop was, so I'm just using Paul's bike as a benchmark.

In terms of performance, the three mods have made a MASSIVE difference. Top end is of no consequence as it's about as aerodynamic as a barn door, but acceleration and flexibility is so much better. I can drop down to speeds of about 35mph without changing out of 6th gear and then accelerate all the way to the top without hesitation!

I'm in Stratford-Upon-Avon, so if you fancy meeting mid-way some time, you can give it a try if you like!

is it set to uk or us gal in the clock display, I get round 40 to 45 going by the display in the clocks I am in the uk and that was with stock bike
vn1700 classic tourer 2013 2,300 miles
if your looking for a nice sounding exhausts I can recommend the cobra Tri-Oval Slip-on Mufflers look good to

I get around 39-42 mpg . even with the mods . Cant complain about that. @ the new prices I filled her up for only $8.00

Hi all,
Just done a second run of about 30 miles. The temp here is about 4 degrees C so not ideal. However, mpg is now showing a UK 31.9 average. With 50 miles gone from a full tank, range is showing 117 miles. Assuming that this is accurate, this would represent 160 ( ish ) miles from a full tank. I would be happy with that and should improve come Spring.

I would think you need to get a few tanks averaged to get a good idea of your mileage. Two runs of 30 miles won't give you good numbers IMHO of course. :)

The MPG and range readings on the Voyager are extremely inaccurate. If you really want to know how those stats are doing, use a phone app calculator such as Fuel Log.

I used that app for both my Nomad (which averaged 17.35km per liter / 40.81US MPG) and my Voyager (which is currently averaging 14.55km per liter / 34.24US MPG ).

I try not to worry too much about the stats - & just ride it.

Generally speaking, I'm not too concerned re mpg for general riding. However, as I am looking to do a tour of Northern Spain this Summer, I need a handle on what mileage I can cover between fills. Northern Spain isn't littered with gas stations. Plan B would be to carry an additional 'emergency' 5 litres on the rack.

VERY TRUE...you really can't go by the oem mpg meter for accuracy, mine was many mpg off when the skoot was stock.

Change rear tire size, or as the rear tire wears and the mpg will change. Add on ANY type of fuel injection tuner and displayed mpg will be affected.

The best way to know actual mpg is documenting actual miles traveled via gps, forget using the stock odometer as it too is not accurate, then knowing gallons at fill up do the math.
