Looking for Drifter Project Bike

2151 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  V2K_Rod
I am an Iraq war vet looking for a Drifter that needs A LOT of help, just something to work on as a hobby to help me with my PTSD.

My riding bike is an 04 Classic, but I am really enamored with the Drifters.

Any suggestions you can provide in helping me find what I'm looking for will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Thank you for your service - do a craigslist search and you will find several - probably in better condition than your looking for though. We have an active VRA chapter here in the Upstate if you ever ride up this way let me know. Also have a chapter in Myrtle Beach as well. Just a bunch folks that like to ride Vulcans, and we are a riding club not a motorcycle club.
If you truly want a project bike...then perhaps starting with a Drifter is the wrong direction.

What about starting with a 99-03 1500 or 800 Classic and making it into a "Drifter"? Should be a LOT more of those available that need work. You can get most, if not all of the Drifter parts.

You can really make it yours that way.

Thats a thought anyway.

Be carful with that statement, the Drifter shares a few things, but not very many. The frame, forks, and swing arm are totally different. The rear fender travels with the rear wheel just like the old Indian Chieftain did, the front fender will not fit the forks. But their is a company out there that makes an aftermarket front, I know this fits the 900 but not sure if the fender fits 800 and 1500. The exhaust pipe won't bolt up either, not that it matters much, it would probably get changed out.

There are a lot more differences than you would think. I love that classic Chieftain look, too me six years to find the right one. And I don't care much for the new Indian, the headlight and front end looks gaudy to me. I think they could have done a better job designing it, looks a little to retro.

I guess I was looking at the "project" bike perspective vs just wanting a Drifter.

You can get the "Drifter" parts or Drifter looking parts for most VN 800s, 1500 and 900s. Plus you can get a zillion other parts for the 800s, 1500s and 900s...to make them custom.

I suppose the question is really wether the OP was looking for a cheap Drifter that needs work...or a project bike to spend time and customize.
Maybe a little late in the game, but I started turning my VN2000 into a Drifter/Indian tribute bike years ago. The saga continues.
