For basic work I have used a simple floor jack and automotive jack stands. Raise the bike with the bike on the sidestand with floor jack then place a jack stand under each exhaust pipe. You will need a helper to put it on the second jack stand.

This setup was very stable when I replaced the steering bearings a couple of years ago.

Thank you. My wife's shock is leaking fluid and that is what we would be working on. I was looking at relatively inexpensive lifts from Harbor Freight, etc. Something that will hold the bike off of wheels, but stable.

I will need the front wheel off the ground so we can work on the front struts.

The no-jack-trick:
  • Build a slope from 3 bricks!
  • Drive on the top with the front wheel!
  • Ask your wife to build a support under the engine!
  • Kick the bricks from under the front wheel!
