I have a 2018 Voyager and have put on 12,000 kms

The other day i decided to check the oil after i washd it and it was on jack and fairly level.

The dipstick did not read any oil???

I have not smelt burning oil or seen smoke out exhaust ?????

So i topped it up with some oil.

Then i read you should run it for 3 min before checking, or check it after a ride??

Should there be that much of a diff? No oil if cold proper oil when warm??

The 1700's use a semi-dry sump. Oil is "stored" in 2 locations, thus the reason it has 2 drain plugs. Oil can migrate from one location to the other while sitting which will give an incorrect dipstick reading. Do a google search for semi-dry sumps for a more thorough explanation.

Your owners manual will give you specific instructions but here's how I check my '17 Vaquero:

Level the bike. I use plastic auto ramps. One slid in from the left, one from the right.
Start the bike. Let it idle until the temp reads halfway to straight up (I think it's the 1st hash mark).
Shut the engine off and time it for 5 minutes.
Check the dipstick.

The manual actually has a chart showing the correct running temp and the settle time based on ambient air temp. It's a pain, but it works.
