Yea, yea, I know....they got shims, not HLAs....but the 1st adjustment after engine breakin is the most important, do a engine flush, add your oil and a filter....
The 900 engines were a complete redesign when they came out, leaning toward the performance VTwin arena.
After your 1st initial valve adjustment, you should have one at about 50K then another around 80K then your next at about 100k....then your getting close to rebuild time.....
The old engines that ran solid lifters (much like this bike), If you listen to your engine carefully, she'll whisper sweet nothings in your ear when its time for adjustment....
I realize the book is in a in-general should do publication....but when the mfg.'er says your plugs are good for 100K, why would you....
Or the 100K engine oil.....between oil changes.....why would you....
Listen to your bike engine, look at how she operates, and try to understand it.....she will commnicate to you what she needs, when she needs it. Its like the drive belt issue, when to change it....
I've seen bikes with 65K on a belt, and aside from the edges of the cogs having a little roll-over wear on the cogs themselves, the belts have looked perfect. Don't go borrowing trouble by thinking the owners manual is the gospil, it ain't....
Because of the EFI, and electronic ign., and this engine being extremely well built, not to mention water cooled, its not that far removed from the engines in small cars. These things can easily hit 100-150K if they are taken care of....
Just my 2 pecos from a ole wrench jockey.....
