Ok so I've seen a lot of the posts but almost have this eBay spike figured out. So the mods to bike are cobra straight pipes eBay spike and pea deleted. I have put in a 52 pilot jet and a 170 main jet. Turned screw to 2 3/4. After changeling this I couldn't get the bike over 40. So I started to shim needle up. I have 6 #4 washers under stock needle. Going down road at 55-60 spits and sputters but if I pull choke out all way and hold with bottle cap and clothes pin I can drive anywhere but when I back off from wide open bike actually picks up. The pipes are turning blue so all this should tell me I'm going lean. So should I put a 190 in it and bring the needle down? The bike feels like I have a lot of power down low but nothing up top.

I have done something similiar to this to with my bike. I used the ebay intake tube and changed the spike out with a uni foam filter. When i first put it on, the bike was running super lean, and i figured it was because all of the gaps where there was metal to metal contact on the intake assembly. I ordered some gasket, cut them to fit, and sealed it all up. I used the 165 main, and a 50 pilot, from a kurakyn jet kit. I also used a aftermarket needle, but many people have made the stock work fine. I think that with stock needle it should be 170 main, and 52 pilot. Do you have baffles in your exhaust? If they are truly straight with no baffles, it may be really hard to tune. I had vance and hines straights shots, but I added baffles (i think it sounds better now). Seal up the intake before throwing a bigger main jet in. I havent heard of anyone going that high.

I agree it sounds high but talking with some harly guys with the 883 this is the jet they are running with hyper charger I need to find better needle what needle did you use? I was almost thinking of sanding the needle down to allow more fuel like what changing the needle would do but only option at this point would be bigger jet to richen it. When the choke is pulled it runs great but I'm sure it is still lean when choke is pulled. Has anyone ever drilled out the needle jet?

Ok small update was told the 52 170 is for the mods useing a stock air box moded with stock needle for spike intake will have no choice to use an after market needle. Had the bike pro tuned has a 56 pilot 215 main jet dyno jet needle dno-106 set on clip 4 getting ready to go watch on dyno was set with analyzer for gas and plug reading

the 170MJ is the best, and the stock 48PJ is best for 800 with 2.75 turns out when using vance and hines pipes and thunder mfg intake with dynojet needle DNO106 2nd notch

This worked for me, leave the stock needle, I hate the adjustable one. It's a major pain to dial in. 6shims seem a bit much leave two in. Try a 50/170 maybe 175 with the a/f screw out around 2 turn from light seat

If it still isn't right try going back to the 48. That's what works for most guys I've been seeing. My heads have a little work done to them that's why I went with the 50, but either one should work for you

I have found that a 170 MJ is plenty enough on my '05 800 with V&H pipes and open air intake w/ K&N filter, you can go to a 175MJ but it's not necessary, once vacuum pulls carb needle out of MJ hole, its all about the MJ size for WOT. I did install a 50PJ and had trouble dialing in the pilot mixture screw with the 50, so I removed the 50 then reinstalled the stock 48 and went to 2.75 on the mixture screw. I have a DynoJet needle #DNO106 from Kit #2147 and e-clip is on 2nd notch from top, no shims/washers under the e-clip, just the 2 washers from the Kit on top of e-clip which does nothing to raise or lower the needle. If you get the DynoJet Kit don't use the MJs in the kit, and the number on the jets is not the actual size but is their own proprietary identification number only. Bike runs great, I did a mpg test on highway getting 45mpg.

I should add this also that I think my 45.9 mpg on my setup could be from the 40T rear sprocket I installed

I think when you back off from WOT and bike picks up, that's surging, and surging could be a sign of a lean condition (too much air maybe). You definitely do not need a 190MJ, that's way too much, and all those washers under the stock needle might be causing a problem, don't use any more than 2 washers on the stock needle, and your Spike intake could also be a factor in bike not running right, maybe yes maybe no, maybe when riding down the road the spike is getting too much air forced into the carb, try to put your left hand over a part of the Spike to sort of cut off some airflow and see if the bike does better. or maybe duct tape the top half of it and go for a ride and see if things improve
