Bought new...I mean new ..like 0 miles. Throttle was very touchy!
Learned as I went and at 550 changed the oil and filter.

Now at 700 things feel; well.... different..
It feels smoother and not as jerky in the throttle. It corners easier and demands more speed.

Really,... is it me getting used to the throttle and shifting or is this something with it getting broken in?

Probably both. The bike is very twitchy in first and second gears, but you'll get somewhat used to it. Shifting at 5k+ helps, and for me a less restrictive exhaust made a huge difference.

I bought my 650 S with 1500 miles on the Odometer. I too found it to twitchy for my taste. I ordered the "Throttle Tamer" and it helped smooth it out. I remove the plastic throttle mechanism and installed the machined aluminum Tamer. I also added the "Booster Plug" and it helped a little more and reduced some of that compression braking. I am happy with the throttle action now.
