How to tension drive belt

Had to take off belt, pulley, and guard to be able to fix my wiring. How can I make sure I had my belt at the correct tension. I put my back wheel adjustment back where it was and to me, the belt feels too tight. Suggestions?

A shade tree technique that will do it is, in the middle of the lower run of the belt you should be able to twist it 90deg. with considerable hand force, no further. Grab the back side with four fingers and press up with the thumb to twist.

This is the time tested practice on the Suzuki Savage forum. Savages have lots of belt squeal and alignment issues. Owners have learned to cut to the chase and get it done.

I agree that Kaw ships em too tight and Kaw dealer service sets em too tight. It's hard on the belt, hard on the drive pulley splines, hard on the left side rear wheel bearing.
