The largest tubing coming off the back of air box, is that supposed to connect to something? Looks like it would pull in un filtered air into the motor.
I never got a chance to look at the routing of everything before it got taken off :(

Yes it does connect to something :). I just rebuilt my carb and had to remove the 3 or 4 hoses off the back of the airbag. If you shine a light up from the other side of the bike, you should see where it connects (I believe the big hose connected to the motor) but you should see where it connects by laying down on the left side of the bike and shine a light up between the 2 cylinders.

Ok, i think i have figured out the large hose, stumbled across another leading to no-where.
The read arrow is pointing at where the hose starts. For context this photo is taken from the right side of the bike, the top of the carb is just visible on the right. To the left is the chrome cover for the rear cylinder.
Any idea where this one goes?

I would suggest you go on YouTube and search on VN800. When I took my airbox off there were 4 hoses all of different diameters that connected to it - vacuum hoses and vents. They all need to be connected. The following video "Kawasaki Vulcan 800 Carburetor Float Needle Valve Replacement" by Enrique Ruiz at about 15 minutes into the video references that hose as a vent hose that goes towards the back of the bike.

you can re-route your crankcase breather hose (with extension hose to it) that comes from the top of the rear cylinder and then towards the left side between the cylinders, then around the rear cylinder to down the frame under the seat and exit that hose to the ground, you don't need a filter on it, just exit it to the ground under the bike, the rest of all hoses on back of airbox backing plate can be done away with (you don't need them)

Awesome ! Thanks ! I just wanted to make sure i was not sucking unfiltered air somewhere it should not go
