Good afternoon all -

I've a 2004 1600 Classic (VN1600A) that has a DOA bulb in the speedometer.

Having looked through both the kawasaki service manual, as well as the owners manual, I don't see a rating/specification for the bulb.

I've also checked the online parts fiche , which shows the bulb as part #92069, T3.4 12v 1.1w bulb at $4.50 each - but I can't see what it looks like from the fiche...

I'm sure that there are those who will say "Go see the dealer to buy one" - however, I'm cheap and try to make lincoln scream because I'm pinching so hard.

I'd much rather buy it aftermarket (perhaps go LED??) and save my hard won pennies.

Might anyone know what specific bulb is in the speedo? As this is currently my only means of transportation (truck is down ATM, replacing the rear hubs) I don't want to tear it apart without knowing I have the right bulb in hand.

Many thanks in advance.

$4.50 doesn't seem much, but I've not heard before of speedo bulbs on vulcans going out, is there something else going on? or are you sure it's just the bulb

There's a thread on changing the speedo bulb in here somewhere.

There is no "bulb" in the speedo housing of a Vulcan 1600 for backlighting...
It's either 2 or 4 SMD leds...
If you want brighter backlighting or different color backlighting, you'll need to be, or know someone that is, an electronic tech with the very specific equipment to accomplish the swap without burning your electronic board...

Who'd a thunk it? Went over a construction 'bump' in the road - light came back on. Go figure.

Thanks for the help folks!

There are "3" bulbs in his 1600 speedo housing. All of them replaceable. :serious:

I guess I'm going to have to take it apart and examine with Mark I eyeball.

The good news is that everything else is running fine - I'll post pics when I get into it. Maybe this weekend. :-D

Yes that does mean that any bump might make the bulb go out again.
Might just need to take bulb out, clean the contacts, and reinsert bulb.
That wont cost anything but some time.

Could also be the way the bulb burnt that hitting the bump caused the filament to attach itself again, but it wont last long. Yes this can happen and they dont last long if it does happen like this.

Backlighting in the speedo housing ???

After inspection of the diagram that you posted, the bulbs you are referring to are for the indicators...
Not the backlighting which was my take on the OP's question...
Maybe the 2004 is different than my 2005, eh???

The repair manuals say there are backlighting bulbs with part numbers and all...

But,
After pulling mine apart...
SMD LED's...
No bulbs for backlighting...
Or I would've changed them pronto !!!

So, you're saying you've previously pulled apart a 2004 1600's dash and lo and behold...bulbs are used for backlighting not LED's as I have asserted???

This conversation has piqued my interest in this issue again though...
I'm considering the possibility of "adding" some blue LEDS to my dash to match my tach lighting...

They'll probably overpower the lack of brightness in the stock SMD LED's...

Thanks for the "enlightenment"...

Actually, you are 100 percent correct and I am the one who is wrong. Apparently I have gotten my bikes confused. The illumination led on your meter is hard wired. My apologies. :frown2:
