Just picked up a 2009 1700 classic. The wife and i went out for a ride yesterday and about 20 minutes into the ride i was down shifting into 2nd and got a grinding noise like the gear wasn't engaged. The next stop i had the same issue and i hit the shifter a little harder. So i took the wife home and it didn't do it again. I took it out by myself same thing i could not get it to do it again. Any ideas????

Probably nothing more than needing to be more deliberate in your shifting.

Dunno if there is any clutch adjustment on that bike but if so be sure it does not have too much slack/is properly disengaging.

I had a similar problem today but it failed completely on me so that I could not upshift at all. Same mild grind sound but would not shift. I'm going to tear into the clutch assembly over the next few days. Mine will shift from first to neutral and back, I checked the alignment marks on the shift shaft and they are still aligned so they have not slipped relative to each other.

Mine is an 06 so it is probably due for a clutch rebuild anyway. I'll start with that and then see where I'm at. If you're not mechanically inclined get a good shop to look at the clutch cable setting for slack and full engagement when actuated.

Grinding Noise

When my 2014 Voyager made the grinding noise, it was accompanied by an oil leak. Found out some seals had given out and the grinding noise was caused by my final drive bearing failing. Fortunately for me the final drive bearing didn't completely fail while I was riding or I am told my back tire would have locked up. 6 weeks in the shop (waiting on the slow boat from Japan) and it has given me no issues since.
