Hey guys and gals....

Last week I have picked up a new GPS for my brand-new bike.
Instead of spending a small fortune on the zumo series, I got this nice big Garmin Nuvi 7" GPS and a RAM Mount Case.
Sometime last week I have also asked you guys how to wire the thing and today I can happily report that I have finished the wiring.
I'm still waiting for a USB extension to have the power and traffic antenna connected, but the main connections are all done.

I had to modify the GPS to get the audio out, but if you are OK with using soldering iron and playing with electronics, then this is not a big deal.
I have also made the audio cable that connects from the GPS to the connectors inside the fairing.
Here are few pics...

Drilled a small hole in the back of the GPS to run the audio cable out of the GPS.

Soldered three audio cables directly to the speaker terminal... easier than splicing those tiny wires.

Test before closing the GPS

Made this audio cable to connect inside the fairing... It's pretty much same thing liked the one you can buy from the Kawasaki, but homemade :)

The two wires connect behind GPS so that I can remove it if I need to.

Finished.

Tomorrow I will take some pics to show you what I did with the power, But in the nutshell, I have placed a new cig lighter socket in the left storage compartment and connected the original charger with traffic antenna there.
This way if I ever want to change it is not modified in any way.

That's it for now folks :)

Have a good one.

I run a USB extension cables (M to F) up my bars and a shorter right angle cable to the unit. The other devices I use a reeled cable to finish the connection. Everything runs into the inner fairing to a box that powers 5v USB and 12 volt sockets. There is always power available for my devices on the bars.

I have a specific question about the wiring to the speaker. Speakers have a positive and negative poll and the stereo wire has 3 wires , right, left and ground so did you put the right and left on to the positive poll and the ground on to the negative poll or something else?

That is exactly what I have done... otherwise you would have audio coming from the GPS only on the left. or right side.
This way, it is still mono, but at least plays through both speakers.

Don't be surprised if you keep getting a warning message that the cable in not compatible with the traffic function. There should be a receiver integrated in the caple to pick up traffic info in certain areas. Gives you re-route options. I have a Garmin and started getting that WITH THE CABLE THAT CAME WITH IT. After you say ok to the warning, I'll pop back up again after a few seconds. It was a real PIA. Garmin sent me a new cable but after a while I started getting the warning message again. Finally figured out how to disable that function. That's an auto GPS too. Be careful that it doesn't get wet and at times it will probably be hard to see when the sun is just right. That's why the MC GPS is so expensive, that and being glove friendly. (I got a pair of touch screen friendly gloves). Other than that I like Garmin products. I've had several. Hopefully it is just mine and that won't happen to yours. Especially after going thru all the work wiring it up an all.

Thanks guys i finished the gps and it works fine. I had a gps on the handle bars with my nomad but only for visual couldn't hear it now it comes through loud and clear. This summer i bought a visor for the gps and it helps a little but when the sun is directly behind you it still washes out the screen but all i need is to listen to it and the screen is secondary anyway. If all goes well we should be in New Hampshire this weekend taking her for it's maiden voyage and right now the weather looks really good.
Pilot747 i don't have the traffic option so no problem here. Thanks
