Crime-ridden Camden, New Jersey - often referred to as the most dangerous city in the United States—is getting rid of its police department.
In the latest example of a cash-strapped municipality taking drastic measures to deal with swollen public sector liabilities and shrinking budgets, the city plans to disband its 460-member police department and replace it with a non-union “Metro Division” of the Camden County Police. Backers of the plan say it will save millions of dollars for taxpayers while ensuring public safety, but police unions say it is simply a way to get out of collective bargaining with the men and women in blue.
“This is definitely a form of union-busting," Camden Fraternal Order of Police President John Williamson told FoxNews.com. “This method is unproven and untested, to put your faith in an agency that doesn’t even [yet] exist.”

So why is it every time a government, local or otherwise, when faced with Reduction of revenue for their ever increasing Spend then Tax programs, go after the BASIC services first?
It’s usually the Police dept, then the Fire dept, then the Garbage collectors.. all to put a squeeze on you to pony up more tax money for them to spend.
They never close of the hose of YOUR money (i.e. buy votes) closing down Libraries, or homeless shelters or free lunch programs or even F’Art programs.?
While am all for busting up unions as they have outlived their purpose on this planet and become another behemoth beast with insatiable appetite for power, still shutting down police dept is not the way to go.

Sometimes economics will just rule. In this neck of the woods, we've had several communities disband their PDs and contract the S.O. to take on policing. Quite common is to go with a unifoed Radio dispatch system first which save considerable dollars for locals. If that fails then contract services is the only to cover it. It's a sad state of economy that brings us here. We had it happen to union and non union PDs so union busting ma not be the primary goal.

I think because those are the things regular ppl see. If they cut the fat off the top no one would notice, then get more upset about more taxes. It aint right. Got the same issues north o the border too. Govt funded hospitals makin cuts to front line workers instead of the excess fat up top. the list goes on.

It would seem a matter of how much taxes the folks want to pay. If they can afford the current costs then no problem. If they can't, well yea you have a problem.

In the south where I live we don't have unions as much. Normally Union pay scales and benefits are more than open shop so the costs are more. But even without Union costs we still have many municipalites that have cut down on police and fire and other services.

Ever since the economy crashed in 2008 the tax revenue just hasn't been there. Too many folks laid of from their jobs means no more taxes collected etc. A lot of folks in my area just had to move away elsewhere looking for work.

Ain't no easy answers to the way things are now.

well it amounts to this;
a governing body comes into existence to provide BASIC services to a community of people who pay for these services thru taxes. These basic services are the Governing bodies CHARTER. these basic services are usually outlined #1.Police(security) 2.Fire(safety) 3.Sanitation(water and refuse) and then other services as the people vote to add as they see fit or affordable.
Butt, as any Government Body grows from being a Organization whose purpose is to SERVE the community.. it reaches some critical mass and becomes an ORGANISM with a life of its own. It no longer is in existance to Serve but to BE SERVED.
Now the first priority of any living entity (Gov=Organism) is to STAY ALIVE. and in order to gaurantee that objective requires it to G.R.O.W. this is where all those dumb ideas for community programs that the people dont want or pay for come from.

So now when crunch time comes, as it will in the ebb an flow of life cycles, These new Gov bodies dont cut back on all the excesses, but rather on the BASIC Services that were their Right to Life charter... Citizens now are faced with voting for further tax increases to get what they'v already paid for a dozen times over.. or like many californikans are in the process of doing.. getting out of dodge..
unfortunately too many are landing over here in Tejas and skrewing up this place with their lib aggendas jus like they did in californika.
