I know the mufflers themselves will be different depending on the model/style, as some are duals and some are same side staggered. But are the headers the same diameter and flange/bolt pattern such that a header set from a VN1500 will fit a VN1600? Mufflers for the most part will work on either engine as they are not engine size specific, with the exception of back pressure.

The 2003 VN1600 I bought has a nice set of staggered duals on it (I think they are Cobras), that are way to loud for me. I'd prefer a set of de-baffled OEM duals as I don't want excessive noise, and loud pipes are NOT safer in my book. I have been riding quiet BMWs for nearly 30 years and I have very few issues in traffic, certainly none that loud pipes would make any better.

My opinion is if I have an issue in traffic, it is MY fault first.

Since you have Cobras on your bike now you should try a set of their Quiet Baffles...
Might just do the trick !!!

As for the cross matching of exhausts...
I never got a definite answer back when I was checking into it.
Called V&H and the engineer told me no...
The tuning is different and the mounts are different...
So I found some Cobra Dragsters on eBay to fit the 1600...
Really like the way they sound and all my riding buddies like the sound of them too...


Like you though, they are just a bit too loud while riding...

i like loud pipes because i can determine when it is time to shift gears by the sound of the exhaust

another thing on loud pipes is that in my option there are only 2 options to pick from, loud or quiet, because i don't believe anything exists to buy or to make that is between loud and quiet

The answer to your question is yes, the header pipe size and flange diameters are the same. The center to center exhaust ports on the 1500 & 1600 engines are the same. Now, how those pipes are bent once they leave the exhaust ports may vary for different bike configuration.

Thanks, THATs the answer I was looking for. I have found a set of used factory debaffled duals for my 1600. So I'll eventually be getting rid of the Cobra duals next summer. Quiet baffles from Cobra may do for now, but I prefer the look of duals. The left side of the bike from the engine to the rear looks odd to me without a muffler there, just looks unfinished and the shaft drive is higher than a belt or chain drive would be, visually, on that side of the bike. So eventually it will have dual mufflers, possibly my own design and fab. I'm particular that way. Made my own muffler internals on my 94 BMW R1100RS and I've been pleased with the results for over ten years and 50,000 miles.

I may be wrong on the current pipes, because they don't match the look of the pipes on the Cobra website. A pic of my VN1600 with the current pipes is attached:

I prefer the look of my Nomad which has a split exhaust, muffler on each side. But if you have a band saw & a welding machine the possibilities are unlimited.

Coming from my riding background on lighter BMWs, I have sketches worked up already for large diameter aluminum bodied mufflers, with enough capacity to act as aural dampers, and allow for internal deflectors without requiring any sort of baffles or packing. Something similar in concept to Flowmaster or Magnaflo mufflers. I have a Flowmaster muffler on my Dakota V8 pickup and it makes nice reasonable sound when I get on it with no drumming at steady highway speed.

I would polish the outside of the aluminum mufflers to a decent shine. The mounts for the mufflers would come off the rear floorboard mounts so if I run the bike without bags there would be no brakets/hangers obviously visible.

Hey I was reading your post about wanting debaffled OEM pipes and im actually in the market for an aftermarket set and I have a set of debaffled OEM pipes lol. If you're still in the market and interested I would love to work something out with you and I actually even live in Fond Du Lac!
