Hi all,

I'd like to get a back rest for my 2005 FI, but I am concerned about the stability of it. I had stripped the seat screw and had to VERY carefully retap it. I am thinking a backrest might be a poor choice since it appears they are all held in by that one screw (seems dicey in the first place).

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

'Retapping' damaged threads always results in weak threads. Sure, you can easily thread a bolt in afterward, but the damage is done. Once the threads have been torn out all running a tap does is straighten up the damaged threads. It cannot replace the lost metal.

Et cetera, and so on...

I don't know how that particular rest is mounted, so I don't know how likely it is to be weak. Can you either drill out and retap for the next size up, or put a nut on the back side? Either will give you a strong repair.

Thanks for the response. All good points. I will try to go the route of the extra nut on the back side first. I was scared enough tapping it originally, let alone drilling it out and tapping larger.
