Bike is an 06 900 with 22k. Valves have never been checked and I'm already doing the stator tomorrow so I figured I'll just check em, I was gonna get a shop to do it. My question is do I need to drain the oil to check em? Or can I replace stator, do an oil change and then check em?

my old one was an 06 as well. I checked the valves at about the same miles. Had one exhaust valve just barely on the edge of the specs that I re-shimmed. Not hard to do, just necessary to take it slow step by step. Have a magnet stick ready. Will probably take you 2-3 hours the first time if you’re anal like me; but you’ll realize when you’re finished that it can be done in an hour next time. I would also just take the tank completely off, to me it’s not worth the hassle to try and prop it up and squeeze in there, they are not hard to remove.

Don’t want to be negative, but checking valve clearance is one of things shops say they did and don’t do it. Make sure you trust your shop or do it yourself.
Like RB32504 stated, it’s not that difficult. In fact replacing the stator is not that difficult either.

Gotcha. Do I need any gaskets for the valve check? Or you think I can get away with the old ones?

Gaskets are rubber and should be fine as long as they were not damaged. Here…follow this procedure. Take note that you will turn the nut “ COUNTER clockwise “ to get to top dead center for the front “TF” and rear “TR”. As Tourer said…many many shops will say they did it and don’t. So it’s good you’re going to tackle it yourself. Not nearly as intimidating as changing a front tube on the side of the road, using the kickstand for a bead breaker. Lol.

I’ve never worked on a bike before and did mine in about 2hours slacking off a few weeks ago it’s way cheaper and if you follow the YouTube videos you can’t mess up. Pro tip a 6x6 should fit under your bike and hold it mostly level with some shims you could completely level it
