Nope I did not disconnect the battery. I assume it fell out of the bike when I removed the side cover and although I did take the tool box out, the battery was never disconnected...
By my thinking anyway, if you never had the battery disconnected at that junction does it seem logical it goes there?

Frankly, it doesn't look like it belongs there to me.

You installed it correctly. It was dropped at one point and you happened to find it. These spacers are included with some batteries to be used when the battery terminal is wider than your cable clip. Do you notice how the tines on the wire are spread out in your pic? These spacers prevent you from having to do that.
That clarifies things and explains why it doesn't show up in the parts book - because it's not a Kawasaki/Vulcan part, it's a "some batteries" part.
