Compare 2006 vn1600a to 1987 vt1100c or 2005 flhr

New member with question
Hi everyone. I currently am riding a 1987 shadow vt1100c. I am considering moving to either a 2006 vulcan 1600 classic or a 2005 road king.

The primary reasons are the tiny 3gal tank on the current ride and hoping for the ability to take longer rides a bit more comfortably with 2 up. Otherwise I'm really enjoying the old girl still. My daily compute on her is 57 miles each way mostly 70+ mph and she is fine for that but...

So anyone have experience with both a vulcan 1600 classic and either the road king or an older shadow 1100 that can shoot me some potential pros and cons of my potential switch? I guess the worst thing I hear about the vulcan is the suspension, but is that relative to a BMW tourer or? how is it compared to what I'm riding now?

Shadow is a smaller bike and much lighter. You'll notice it if you step up to the 1600 or the HD. If you are looking at a road King and plan on longer drives look at a Street Glide instead.

But I've had a Road King and I have a 1600, I'm tall and the HD is a minibike comparatively speaking, you sit lower, the bike is shorter. More like your Shadow. But it's apples and oranges, completely subjective, ride one for an hour in both city traffic and highways and you'll know what you want.

I owned a 1987 Shadow Vt1100c for 10 years...
It isn't even in the same class of ride as my current 2005 1600 Classic...
Gobs more torque, 10 more ponies, single pin crank and a 5 speed tranny make for similar speeds, definitely NOT slower...
The Shadow was a bit squirrelly in the curves at speed in comparison...

You will take a while getting use to the 16 inch front wheel but after doing so it will feel planted in the curves and more nimble than you can believe in slow speed maneuvering...
Still it's a BIG bike with a longer wheelbase than a Fat Boy...
MPG's have been hovering around 41-45 with a low of 35 when getting on it for a tank full around town...
I do have the "resistor mod" installed though...

Debaffled it just sounds too good not to roll it on !!!

The 1600 is more of a big cruiser whereas the VT1100 to me always felt like a moderate muscle bike, simpler and less complicated. The torque from a big V-twin is addictive and becomes more so with greater displacement. The newer Harleys keep getting better, but I'd never own one that wasn't always under a very comprehensive warranty.

Absolutely. But before my current bike, I had a Yamaha 1100 Virago which would run circles around this one. Just had no room for two up which I now have.
I don't use the power that my Vulcan has as it is ( for that matter, the Virago either) so the power is "adequate" for my wife and myself.

The fellow was asking for a comparison, so I gave one.

We're on the same page here. The reality of it is not too many people will be exploiting the full power of their bike, heck I used to have a crotch rocket and it was boring at even semi-legal speeds and didn't even feel like I was going all that fast until well into the triple digits. It got good mileage, handle great & was fast as stink but really wasn't all that comfortable. The one big positive about Harleys is that you can rent one very similar to a used one you might be considering, as not many sellers, dealership or otherwise will give you a couple days to get some seat time and see if what you think you're looking for really is what you want.

There was a fellow a while back that had just traded his Shadow for a Vulcan and was complaining about where his power went.
Sometimes one focuses on the displacement figuring that more cc's = more power, but it does not work that way.

Like I said it's subjective.

I had the first year, actually one of the first 20 V-Maxes back in 85, it was scary fast, could do burnouts at any speed and wheelies in any gear.

After that all cruisers seem pretty mild. My 1600 is torquey enough that 2 up is still comfortable and easy and the motor lopes along at under 3K at highway speeds. And the floorboard are the limiting factor for cornering.

If you're a smaller guy, maybe an HD is something to look at, if you want to carve up the road, maybe something other than a Vulcan, but for comfortable cruising it's a nice bike. Fires up every day, after you scrap the crappy intake system it breaths well and gets decent mileage.
