That clunking is a common noise out of the Kawis gearbox, mine was more pronounced when I downshifted. The wifeys 1600 was even worse! A simple way to quiet the gearbox down is to change the oil over to a synthetic. I put Rotella T synthetic in both bikes and the clunking all but disappeared!

How come that the synthetic oil makes so much difference in the shifting noise? Is its viscosity/thickness really that much different from the dino oil? Or is it somehow more sticky?

I found my brand new classic had a major thunk going into 1st gear from neutral. After I changed the factory oil to a generic m/c dino oil 10w40 (canadian tire m/c oil) the thunk was not so pronounced. Can't explain it but I'm much happier with how it runs...

Not to start another dreaded oil thread but I've tried 6 major oil brands so far. Rotella T6 and T5 both quiet down my bike and provide a nice feel in the gearbox. Castrol Syntec was by far the worst oil I tried and Mobil-1 wasn't far behind even though I run it in 3 cages (now all run Rotella). Both oils were noisy and the gearbox felt loose and sloppy. Surprisingly Pennzoil wasn't too bad. Amsoil was ok but didn't provide any decernable benefit to justify the cost if you change your oil frequently, and it's a pain since it's not readily available.

To me Valvolicne MC oil was the worst. Not only clunky but engine became very noisy.
MC oil Mobil 1 10-40 was good, 20-50 made mine clunk get louder and engine became noisier as well. In mine Castrol Evo 10-40 worked pretty good but now running Rotella 15-40 and the bike is running very smooth.
