Hey guys, it's been a while.

I'm having an issue with the carb on my 98 VN800a. When I first roll on the throttle it stumbles a bit. It's at its worst when the bike is cold but even when warmed up doesn't respond quite the way it should. It rides and idles just fine. This only occurs while cold or just starting from a stop.

Now, I know there is an accelerator pump on this carb. My guess is that it's out of whack, but I'm not sure how to adjust it.

Thoughts?

Could it be simple gas issues? As in, did you recently get gas from a different place? Or is it OLD gas?

No this has been going on for a while, I just haven't had time to deal with it. Riding season is almost upon us and it's time to get its done before they season really kicks in.

It's really just a sputter. Not awful but it has caused some semi uncomfortable moments when making lower speed maneuvers.

I think I'll try richening the mix a little. Maybe that will sort it out.

Wait until your bike is warm then set idle to 1200-1300 rpm. If you don't have a tach, 1300 is not loping like a Harley and not like you have throttle on it) Then pull choke knob out 1/2 way and check for 'stumble'. Does it get better? If it gets better, you are enriching your mixture, so you either have a partially plugged pilot jet or you need a larger pilot jet in the long run). But for now, you can enrichen your mixture w/screw to make the stumble go away if it's not too far out of whack. Mine did the exact same thing and I ended up at 4 turns out. I eventually went to the next size pilot jet (50) and I was able to put the screw back to around 2. No more stumble after that.

Stock or aftermarket exhaust? It makes a difference on your fuel mixture screw setting and maybe your pilot jet. I'm assuming your carb is clean. I doubt it is your accel pump. You can easily check it to see.
