Vulcan 900 Darksider #1

I've got about 23 thousand miles on darkside tires on this bike. Took the first one off prematurely when I swapped rims.

Nahh, they's a bunch of em now. Look over on the Delphi Darkside forum for a bunch of 900's. And there are guys from over on the BTK forum that I know of. The 900 is a popular bike and for those of us that commute with it, it's nice having a tire that holds up. Does it handle as good as a MC tire? I don't know, I couldn't tell the difference from when I put it on and took the old metz off. Fact is I spent the first couple weeks trying to see if I could feel any difference.

Now lately, I've been having a wobble issue, but that turned out to be my FRONT tire was wearing badly. This I believe stems from and has deteriorated from a day when I went out to the bike and the tire was flat. I had a nail in it. It was a slow leak so I took a long time getting home, airing the tire up and riding it till it went flat. This screwed the tire up somehow, it's funny shaped. Maybe a belt is broken in it I don't know but it wouldn't track straight at low speed and the highways on the way home were feeling uncertain at anything over 65 mph and the rear end could start wobbling anywhere over 70. I haven't had much time on the tire since I put the new Metzler on the front, but I have had the bike up to 95 in one curve that last week gave me fits at 60. More testing will prove my faith in it. But when I first changed over to the darkside I felt NO difference at any speed. I think we're back there now.

If you go dark though, DO the break in period. The tire will break in and work differently then when you first get it on. It will be softer and more suppler. This may be different then higher performance MC tires but the difference is the 20-25 thousand mile lifespan of the Altimax as compared to the 5000-7500 of high performance MC tires.

Add me to the list. If you search the "Vulcan 900" forum for "darkside" you'll get some information that you may find helpful along with the Delphi link MrClean gave you.

Here's a Darkside thread in this forum to get you started. You'll find that, to some, it's a pretty controversial mod.

I'm too chicken to try it. After almost 3 years with the 900 I still corner it like a sport bike and frequently have to move my feet so the footpegs can fold up. Not sure I want to try it with a cage tire. Don't want to change my corning habits either.

How long do you go before you change tires? Is it a season? Couple times a season? What do you use the bike for?

I commute with my ride. That's not to say I don't have diminishing bank indicators on my footboards, those get raised all the time as well. But 99% of the time I'm just going back and forth to work to the tune of 1.5 to 2 tires per year. Now, I do my own tires now so swapping out to a MC tire wouldn't be so hard, about twice the expense as the Altimax that I have on and I'll get mid 20's on this tire which is about 3 times the distance of the MC tires. But if it took me 3 seasons to wear out a tire I wouldn't go to a car tire, the darn thing would ROT off the bike before I wore it out.

I don't have any problems doing the twistees down in Eureka Springs so that doesn't bother me.

My Avon has lasted two years and still has plenty to go; I only have 7500 on the odo and 7300 on the Avon thanks to a nail in stock lop. My work commute is 6mi/day. It takes an hour to get to open road so riding is a pain, especially when the boat ramp is less than 5 miles from my house. I'd have more miles if the wife would ride but she's given up with the crazies around here....so we take the cage everywhere.

With that kind of mileage and conditions I'd just stay MC tire. Like I said, if you only go through a tire every 2 to 3 years the Car Tire would last better then 10 if it didn't rot first.
