Hey folks,

I'm going to be selling my 900 most likely and I'm looking to upgrade to a 1700. However, I've been a fan of the 1600 too and I came across the following 1600 classic.

It's pretty much stock and the price is $4,050 for a 2007 model with 43,000 miles. The current owner says he's only used it to travel to work daily and that h bought it second hand from another owner.

One thing that makes me approach this with caution is the fact that the seller (private sale) insists on saying that the bike is 1700cc and NOT 1600. I told him that the bike is shaft drive and a 2007, so it could only be a 1600, but he says the bike is a stock 1700cc. Uhmmm, no, it's a 1600cc and it's, in fact, a 1552cc to be precise (so barely a 1600). I know this bike very well to know it's a 1600cc as it's a bike that I've always liked a lot.

Is this guy just making up stuff to try to sell the bike OR was there a special 2007 model with upped cc's (as stupid as it sounds)? I'm smelling bullsh*t all the way, although the guy didn't sound like he knew too much about the bike. I'm thinking the previous owner sold him the bike saying it's a 1700cc LOL

The bike has tacky stickers which would be gone immediately, but, other than that, it's stock. Valves were checked at 30,000 miles despite being hydraulic adjusted, so that's a good thing. I'm just cautious with the fact this guy was trying to convince me this is a 1700cc and NOT a 1600cc.

Would you think a seller who says this could be hiding stuff from the bike and not telling them? I think you have to be a pretty big bullsh*tter to try to convince me this is a 1700cc.

Opinions? How's the $4,050 price for this STOCK 2007 Classic with 43,000 miles?

Any experiences with sellers trying to claim a bike has more cc's than it actually has?

Lastly, is that a Mustang seat I'm seeing? Driver's seat looks like it but the passenger seat looks like it's deformed and concave?

The 1700 engine first come out in 2008. I had a 2006 1600 classic the same color. Soft bags and windshield. Had 2300. Miles. Paid 3500. That is not a bad asking price. If is it mechanically sound. Go for it. They are good engines. The trade in value is good also.

That there is a 1600. Look around the frame, probably close to the steering head. You should see a VIN plate attached somewhere with the model and/or CCs somewhere on it.

Examples...

Bottom center, "ZG1400C"


Bottom center, "KL650E"


If it were me buying, I would be VERY careful. If the seller is trying to misrepresent what he's selling, what else is he lying about? If the seller just doesn't even know what he's selling, what else doesn't he know about? Nice looking bike. Good luck.

1. It is a 1600.
2. My concern would be about the valve check. How and who did that and what specifications were used?
Provisions for checking are not provided, so....?

Hi Vulcaneer,

Those pictures you posted. The last picture shows a Spanish registration on the bike. Are you aware of that?

Only way it's a 1700 is if he bore it out and did a kit, ThunderMfg.com used to sell the complete kit. If displacement is what you want, look for a VN2000, that's 2053cc not 2000 and belt driven. Highly customizable, here is mine...

I bought a fully decked out 2004 vulcan 1600 classic with mustang seat, driver backrest, sissy bar, luggage rack, passenger floorboards, included a 15" riot shield as well, for $2700 with 53k miles. I'd say with that many miles and the few accessories, maybe $2500 to $3000 would be a more realistic price?

I just bought a 2004 1600 classic, with 40k miles for $2000 - with bags, windshield and some other custom goodies including a custom flame paint job.

I think he's a bit high, especially since he doesn't know what he really has.

That's a few miles for that price .. you will be looking at the following maintenance especially if its never been done. and you can use this info to get a better price I would be looking into at least $3500 or less I know that used bikes usually need a lot of maintenance which was lacking by the PO.

1.Clutch may be worn out (not sure a clutch would last 43000 miles but I doubt it so it may have been changed.)
2.From my reading the 1500/1600 Cam chain is notorious for stretching rather quickly (you can get Tensioner Extenders from bad ace to make the chain tensioner work longer. ) so if you hear any slapping noises on the motor you know the chains are loose.
3.Front fork seals and /or oil change
4. Drive shaft greasing with moly. (drive shafts are not as low maintenance as it would seem but its not a huge job and many do it when they change tires.) I would rather have a belt and my next bike will have a belt.
5.Swing arm bearing grease if its never been done check for wear then clean/lube.
6.Steering stem bearing grease. (kawi was noted for not putting enough grease in the bottom steering bearing and many rusted and pitted but im assuming if that was the case it was fixed well before 43000 miles.
7.Is the battery any good? if its over 4 years old its likely on its way out soon.
8. Tires: they can look good and still need to be changed if they are over 5 years old they can lose their stickiness.
9. Check for leaking cam plugs which is a common issue..
general oil/fluid changes are advisable such as rad fluid , engine oil , final gear oil , brake / clutch fluid .
