I noticed a strange thing tonight on the way home. My bike died three consecutive times while I was doing approximately 55 to 65 mph. All three times, I held the clutch in for about 5 seconds or so and it just died. I noticed this on accident and decided I would figure it out hence the three times :) Anyways, it would start right back up and ran fine with no hesitation or problems whatsoever. It does not do this in 1st, 2nd or 3rd and I didn't bother trying in 4th. Anyone ever encounter this before? I have a 2006 Vulcan 900 with Cobra Speedsters and no other mods........yet.

I've never had this happen, but I don't think I've ever held the clutch in for anything close to 5 seconds when riding at 55-65.

Never heard of and don't know of anything that would cause it. The fix is easy, don't in the clutch on the highway. I've been riding since the 70's and never had a reason to hold the clutch in that long.

It was a simple fix and honestly I discovered this by accident. Occassionally it happens between 1st and 2nd at start up, even after proper warm up. I'd attributted it to the computer start up cycle. The inquisitive side of me wanted to reproduce the effect hence the 3 times at speed. In the previous incidents (start up) it would restart with no other effects or problems and my baby has never given me any problems. I have 16,000 miles on her without any major problems at all. Perhaps I'll bring it to a dealer for a computer scan.

Mine has shutoff a few times just not under the conditions you posted. Mine always did it in 1st or 2nd. My calculator computer initializes faster than my 900.

Try goosing up your base idle a little to see if that helps. That is that little thinga magig sticking out of the front of your air filter. That should hold the base idle.

The air switching valve which you notice during startup (higher idle) is only to help during starting and to keep the idle stable. You're right. It's slow.

If all else fails check for intake leaks. This can be done with a can of WD-40 or a propane torch. Know what you are doing. Do not use starting fluid or carb cleaner.

I do not know how long the intake boots/seals last on these 900's but I can tell you from experience that the air cooled eat 'em up. Especially in the heat.

Start with the simple first. The base idle adjustment.

It was a simple idle adjustment. I discovered two things with this....if your 900 "lopes" like a hot rod waiting at the starting line......you might want to bump the idle up a bit :cool:

In the process of deciding this from the forum and trying to adjust the idle this morning on the way to work. I learned that it's not a good idea to do this while riding to work ;)

Thanks for the input and assistance. It's great to have a place to bounce ideas off of and to learn from others :)
