OK so I'm an idiot. Because I hadn't ridden my 1995 Vulcan 1500-A for a while, it was running pretty rough - so rough that the speedo cover was contacting the "top cover" of the indicator light assembly below it (p. 307, fig. 128 of Clymer) and making a lot of noise. Eventually I added some carb cleaner to the gas and things are a lot better though the engine still backfires on decel and probably needs a proper carb clean - never been done, low mileage bike. My bad.

Anyway, the indicator light assembly cover has now cracked completely through (took a while for the crack to lengthen) and the bike is unrideable without the temporary fix of putting thick cord into the gap between the speedo and the cover. This works surprisingly well (no contact between plastic bits, no noise) but obviously things need to be fixed properly. The speedo is undamaged.

Questions:

- Where do I get a replacement cover if I were to do the job myself? All the electrics (indicator lights, high beam light etc) are working fine. It looks from the Clymer drawing that there are TWO covers - I assume that only the upper one is broken but I'm not sure.

- Is this a job I should consider doing myself? I've never done much but change the oil and put on a windshield and some footrests. Now that I'm retired I have the time at least.

- How much labor would be involved for a professional to do it.

Thanks for any advice. I miss riding the Vulcan. I like my 2001 Golding GL1800 but the V-twin is preferable for cruisin' the mountains and deserts east of San Diego.

No, I haven't bought it yet. It's cheap ($25 on ebay), but I wonder how much trouble I might get into doing it myself. Seems straightforward enough from Clymer (just remove the headlight first, then disconnect the various wires to indicator lights etc and remove the broken indicator cover) but I might have to deal with a problem with the speedometer mounting as well. Hopefully I'll have good access to that when I get in there.

Here's an ebay link that shows photos of the cover. Mine's a '95 not a '91 but I'm pretty sure it's the same cover:

Well, how much trouble could I get into ..... :)
