Im planing on punting my 09 1700 nomad up for the winter at the end of the month and want to do a few upgrades over the winter. Im looking for some input on a few. My plan is to have the ecu flashed by Ivan and put on a K and N air filter or one of Chucksters BAKs not sure witch one yet. Kawasaki Voyager, Vaquero, Nomad, and Classic (VN1700) $195.00 or Kawasaki Voyager, Vaquero, Nomad, and Classic (VN1700) 9″ Open style $245.00 are the ones Im thinking of. So my questions are.
1 Is a Big air kit worth it over just a K&N filter if Im not going to change the exhaust as I both like the sound the bike has and I only have so much cash.
2 With the 9" open is riding in the rain going to be a problem? I dont ride a lot in the rain but I like to ride to work and the weather changes sometimes.
3 Any problems with doing the above upgrades and putting the bike up for a few months with out riding it.
4 I have read that the O2 sensor needs to be unplugged after the ECU flash but I have heard different things about what year 1700 even have a O2 sensor anyone know if a 09 has one?

Thanks

for winter storage, all I do to my '05 800 is #1 drain the gas out of the carb bowl, #2 put a cup of seafoam into the gas tank and fill the tank with gas to expell all the air, and #3 put a jack on the rear wheel to get it up off the cement floor and put a piece of thick cardboard under the front tire, and that's it. Come Spring I change the engine oil with a new filter, check tire pressures, and ride.

I put the Chuckster closed BAK($195?) on my 2012 Nomad but took it off before having the ecu flashed & just put the K & N in. I found the BAK to be noisy which was a pain on long rides. IMHO doing the air without the pipes is of little value, especially if you are having the flash done. In Australia we had the European model Nomad which had the O2 sensor & this is not required after the flash. Mine is zip tied under the side panel & bike runs great. The flash is the best mod you will ever make.

I can’t hear the stock whereas you will probably hear the BAK over the standard exhaust

YES. I have V & H slash cuts with just the K & N and am more than happy with the power & smoothness of the ride.

I've tried both Chuckster's BAK, and a K&N filter in the OEM intake. Before the flash, and with a fuel tuner, I could tell a difference in the power between those two intakes. The BAK gave noticeably more... After the flash, fuel tuner removed, I tried them both out again - and have stayed using the K&N / OEM intake. I couldn't tell there was any difference between them in power at all, and preferred the less "percussive" noise provided by the OEM intake.

Ivan's re-flash is the biggest improvement you can do to your 1700.
