Funny, and disheartening, my invitation came ON my 50th birthday! And, I joined; but later I quit when I learned that they support socialism.

I thought it was cool when they started sending me stuff a few years back and i liked the benefits that membership offered, so i joined. Soon afterward, i started paying attention to the types of activities they supported and promoted. I cancelled my membership and don't intend renewing.

I did however join the American Motorcycle Association. Now there's a worthwhile organization for a biker to belong to.

rember a Robin Williams movie... "What ever happened to Aarp?"

"SOME IDEAS ARE SO STUPID ONLY INTELLECTUALS BELIEVE THEM."
George Orwell

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.
It could not be any simpler than that. (Please pass this on)
Remember, there IS a test coming up. The 2012 elections.

Nomad LOL assimilate automatically took me to the Borg. They continue to send me mail and I just turned 51, I'll have to check them out myself before I decide because they definitely have some good deals or perks with membership.

Whiling away the time reading some interesting threads and posts.

But hey now. Those socialists ain't stupid. They know that good capitalists produce good money. AARP sponsors United HealthCare Ins. Good company with a majority of retired folks using their supplemental ins. And Progressive Ins., excellent service with good rates. I use em knowing full well their chairman pals around with G. Soros.

I agree with the majority of the regular contributors to this thread. But when the day comes when what comes in gets way too close to what goes out, your dollar becomes less of a philosopher and more of a pragmatist.

I'm 53 and don't give a toot about aarp, politics, my psa score, whether I will get dementia/alzheimers, or the pace maker doc wants to stick in me.

I just want to ride. Then when not riding, I'll log in here and get reminded of it all. :)
