What function is served by the cross pipe on 500 Ltd exhaust. Is it necessary for proper operation? I am re holding a 98 Vulcan and someone chopped the exhaust and did a terrible job straight piping the bike, and they chopped the cross pipe off. I am trying to use what I have and not buy used headers

i'm not a factory engineer by any means...but I'd surmise the crossover was designed to offer quiet, less restriction and enhance an exhaust scavenging effect. I'd guess many factors such as airbox/carb design, camshaft configuration combine to determine specific build parameters, such as inside diameter, overall length, bends, the use of crossovers, etc.

No doubt there is some science involved.....and a balancing act...the factory design must meet noise and emissions standards as well as providing basic performance needs, meanwhile looking fairly good on the bike.
