So, I'm eyeing a new 1700 - awesome bike. And, I'm trying to decide between that and a Heritage Softail. The problem is that I can't quite keep my feet flat on the ground while sitting on it. Does anybody know of a lowering kit for the 1700? I'm kind of a short girl! Thanks!

The kit is a pair of Progressive 412 shocks and an adapter spacer to fit the Vulcan. The stock shocks are 14" and the 412 shocks are 12". Lowering the Vulcan has good and bad trade offs. The good is planting your feet down, the bike comes off the kick stand much better. The bad issues are very little suspension travel, and scrapping the undercarriage if you ride aggressively and if you have saddle bags you can't adjust the 412 shocks without removing the bags.

If you want different shocks you can go to the Progressive Shocks web site http://www.progressivesuspension.com/ for more information and options. And go here to download their specs on all their shocks: http://www.progressivesuspension.com/pdfs/7100-105.pdf In choosing your shocks make sure the spring rates are at least 300 Lbs/in.

You can also lower the front end a bit by loosening the triple clamps and push up the forks about an inch.

I lowered my Voyager with the 412 shocks and lowered the front end as described above. All things considered I'm happy with modifications. Planting your feet is just about mandatory with a 900 lb. motorcycle.

Sweet. Thanks, Raw! I'll have to look into this! I've seen some posts indicating that the Scootworks. Folks are less than reliable, though - any personal experience here?

My only experience with Scootworks is the lowering kit and I had no trouble.

From the Progressive PDF spec you can pick out any shocks you want and order them from anybody. You'll just have to fabricate a spacer for the upper mounting. The spacer is just a cylindrical tube with a correct inside diameter and length for a proper fit to the upper mount. You could probably use a bunch of washers to accomplish the same thing.
