coolant reservior

ok so the shop wants $350 to replace $30 coolant reservoir they may or may not have busted so ya not happening. the manual says remove the rear wheel is that just for extra room to get to the mud guard and shock or is that a must to get the res. out? I know its possible to remove the shock as long as the wheel is supported. any help would be awesome
