Rear wheel hub/coupling has play. Normal?

(Still restoring 1996 Classic 800 w/18K on it; almost done!)

Rear wheel attached, chain on, in neutral: Grabbing onto the sprocket/rear wheel coupling unit with both hands I rocked it back and forth inside the hub. There is about 1/8" 'play' in it. I know there is a rubber damper behind it but didn't know if this play was normal or was a sign that the rubber damper needs replacing. Thoughts? Thanks!
