Tank question

I have an 03 classic. I bought a gas tank off of a 2000 vn 800 and my gas cap does not fit... it's too big. My understanding was that they were all interchangeable but I guess that's not accurate. My question is do I need to buy a cap for a 2000? I bought the tank off of eBay

maybe a gas cap for a 2000 won't fit either, see if you can measure your new 2000 gas tank opening and i will measure my '05 just to compare
